Learn to keep your North Idaho "backyard forest" healthy on Feb. 13th

The opportunity to own a few acres in the woods is something that attracts many newcomers to our beautiful north Idaho communities.  The dream of buying a home with some elbow room in a forested setting is easily obtained and enjoyed by many or our neighbors.

Homeowners with 5 or less acres of forest land usually aren't interested in managing them for timber harvest.

Mostly, these owners of "backyard forests" are simply interested in keeping them healthy.  Unfortunately, most don't do preventative care and maintenance of their forest.

It's only when a visible health
problem arises that they look for a remedy.

Fortunately, the University of Idaho Extension Office is hosting a two-hour workshop to help forest owners apply basic concepts of forest ecology in order to keep their trees healthy.  It is co-sponsored by the Idaho Department of Lands and is being held as part of the University of Idaho Master Gardeners' Evening Horticulture Workshop Series.

Participants will learn about:

  • Tree Species native to north Idaho
  • How forests grow and change over time
  • Common forest insects and diseases
  • Methods to improve forest tree health
  • Reducing potential insect, disease and fire problems
  • Ways to enhance forest wildlife habitat

Backyard Forests workshop will be held on Monday, Feb. 13th
from 6-8 p.m. at the U of I Extension office
located at 1808 N. 3rd Street in Coeur d'Alene.

Please pre-register by February 7th by contacting the Extension office at (208) 267-3235.  There is a $10 fee for handouts and refreshments.

Interested in purchasing your own backyard forest?  Here is the link to all properties for sale in the Coeur d'Alene MLS on 2 to 10 acres

This is great information for folks with a little elbow room on their lot.  Replacing trees can be very costly.  It is best to care for them!
