Home Staging Safety Tip

Home Stager with Room Service Home Staging

Protecting Your Child’s Privacy

If you’ve placed your house on the market then you’ve been told by your agent, your friends, your home stager, and the cable television shows home staging tipthat you need to remove personal photos.

However, besides removing your personal photos, there is another category of personal items that you should remove for your child’s protection.

These are items that have the name of your child on it.

This includes the cute plaques that I see in a child’s bedroom, bean bag chairs with a child’s name, bath towels, pillowcases…anything that would give a stranger who enters your home information about your child.

Removing photos of your children, not only allows buyers to see it as their future home and not feel as if they are intruding in someone’s space, but it also helps to protect your child's identity.

The same is true of monogrammed items and anything else with their name on it.

home staging tip

So please, if you are selling your house, take this one extra staging step to protect your children.

Kathy,

This is one of those suggestions when a tiny detail makes a lot of difference and sets the stage perfectly.  I also think that Maria Sapio made a good point about having the child's name visible.  A

Kathy this is very good advice. One I had not really thought about much but it makes really good sense to me.My folks do remove personal photos and de-personalize their homes but I will look for anything with a childs name on it from now on - very good advice.

Very good advice.  You never know who is coming in to your home.  Best to be safe than sorry.  I have always had the opinion that sellers should leave a few photos out so the buyers can see what type of family lives there.

We see this all the time, even artwork on the walls spelling out the child's name. Sadly, we live in world where we have to take safeguards to protect our young ones. :( Great advice, Kathy. D

So true...I tell my sellers that we can make sure buyers have pre-approval to buy...but I cannot guarantee they are not perverts.

Hi Kathy Streib

Good point. I never thought of removing their names. A stager I know drilled it into my head...If she could leave my house and know my family history we had too many pictures.

Sheila Anderson I hadn't until I started staging.

Hi James Dray it's a shame that we have to think about it.

Harry F. D'Elia can't put anything past those kids!!!

Maria Sapio it's such a shame that there are predators out there.

Mark Loewenberg This may be overly cautious but can you ever be too cautious.  I'd not thought about this until I began staging.

Nina Hollander I get carried away when I see the cute rooms!

Thanks Donald Urschalitz

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I don't think many sellers have thought of this.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel we try to protect our children and part of it is making sure we don't display their name.

Hi Michael Jacobs it seems awfully small doesn't it.

Thank you Anna Banana Kruchten If you think about it, a stranger could call out a child's name and the innocent child thinks that it's ok..they know them.

Belinda Spillman I don't get obsessive about having all photos removed because some sellers just need to have them around.

When we bought our current home it was full of little Mia's photos (2 were actual poster size in the living room) and her monogrammed bag and jacket and hat.  Unbelievable!

Isn't it kind of sad that in this day and age we have to consider things like this to protect our children?  But psychopatahs and sociopaths look like everyone else, they don't come with a label so we can identify them.  Things like laptops, and jewellery should also be put away, anything of value.

I agree with Gloria, it is sad we have to even consider this.   I myself have my kids names on the walls, and to be honest I am not sure I would even think about it selling my own house because I kind of forget they are there, but I think about it every time I show a house with it.-Kasey
