Where's the Will?

By

will

I can't tell you how many calls I've had recently where a friend reaches out to me because their parent has just passed away. In their grief, they have no clue where to start and begin searching for a will.

Friends, have the conversation with your parents. If there is a will, they should tell you the location. How can they decide if a will is necessary? Let me tell you - it's MUCH easier to  settle an estate when there is a will.  (Just a little side note... Everyone should have a will... if you don't already have one, get one! If you need help getting one, let me know and I can put you in touch with an estate attorney that can help you with the inevitable!)

I'm very thankful that my Mom has told me where all her docs are and even made me copies of them.

That is a great idea. My parents and in-laws have done the same. No surprises!

My dad did not have a will...Everything went to mom of course, but we are setting her up  right.

In our state even your father's estate would need to go through probate unless there wasnt much to probate.

Having gone through something similar when family members have passed, I can attest that your words are wise.

I think I have around 10 friends who have had someone pass in the last 90 days. There's a common problem with wills.

Good morning Teresa. Really good points here. It matters always and knowing where it is....that's crucial.

WHERE the will is seems to be the biggest issue. Thanks for your comment.
