George Washington slept here. A lot.

"George Washington slept here" is a common phrase used when some institution is trying to gain notoriety for the guests who used its facility. To have evidence that George Washington, our nation's first president, slept in your establishment is an incredible feather in your cap. In Winchester, VA, George Washington did more than sleep, he lived her for much of his younger life.

In the Digital Encyclopedia of George Washington, Dr. Curtis Morgan, Jr. writes, "For a decade, from 1748 until 1758, George Washington spent more nights in Winchester than any other place besides his home. Washington spent the most formative period of his life in Winchester. There he learned geography and topography, raised, commanded and supplied troops (including troublesome militia), built and managed a fort, and achieved political office. Washington would also draw upon lessons learned in all of these experiences as war leader and President."

The Washington Office Museum still stands at the corner of Cork and Braddock Streets. General Washington spent many of his younger years as a surveyor in the Winchester-Frederick County, VA area. It is recorded that he began that phase of his career at 16 in Winchester. Washington surveyed the area from 1749 to 1752. There are markers around the city labeling lots he surveyed at that time. The museum still holds Washington's personal affects, his surveying equipment and a scale model of the city of Winchester around 1755.

On the grounds of the office is a cannon used by  General Edward Braddock in Alexandria, VA. Washington also used his office as his base while he built Fort Loudoun on the north end of Winchester. Fort Loudoun consisted of four diamond-shaped bastions and 24 cannons. The fort has since been swallowed up by time, but the location is well know in the Winchester community.

Good morning Mike. This is so very interesting and I never knew that so many of Washington's personal affects are in your hometown.

Sheila, it's interesting. I walked past and drove past the museums in Winchester my whole life, and I didn't bother to look at any until I had sons. We have Washington's Headquarters, Stonewall Jackson's Headquarter and Sheridan's Headquarters. There were Civil War battles on all sides of the city and a few Revolutionary War skirmishes. You can still find mini-balls on and in the ground here. I have a paint can full from our farm. They were found while plowing for planting season. It's a great place for a history buff to live.

William, that would be great. We're about an hour from DC, an hour and a half to Gettysburg, less than a hour to Antietam, 40 minutes to Bull Run, 10 minutes to the battle of Cedar Creek and Kernstown, 3 hours to Williamsburg and Yorktown, 2 hours to Richmond and Petersburg. Washington's home and Thomas Jefferson's home are both within an hour. Virginia is a historians dream come true.

Very interesting, Mike.   When I go back East, I realize how young the West really is historically and architecturally.
