U.T.C. in San Diego-a well known hidden gem!
(What is UTC?) I asked the same question when I arrived in San Diego in 2003; this town loves it’s neighborhoods and those acronyms that make you sound local; each with unique characteristics and pride.
UTC is short for University Towne Centre. For example we never say “Pacific Beach”, it’s always “PB”. I’ve never heard anybody say “University Towne Centre” it’s always UTC.
This UTC area map shows you where we got our "Golden Triangle".
I’m always asked, “What does UTC stand for and where is it in San Diego?” University Towne Centre! It's the neighborhood that makes up the upper portion of The Golden Triangle or for you tourists: UTC is the nexus of 3 neighborhoods and UCSD. You can literally cross the street at the intersection of Genesee and La Jolla Village Drive and pending on whether you go West, East, North or South, you’ll be leaving one zip code and entering another, all at one intersection! UTC is La Jolla East (which includes the UCSD campus), Sorrento Mesa or (Sorrento Valley West), University City North and Torrey Pines South.
I landed in one of the 4 typically places most relocation people do when they first rent a home here: Downtown, Mission Valley, UTC/La Jolla and Carlsbad. Why? It’s my belief because they are central to the job they seek or were transferred for, close to the military bases or familiar; meaning the biggest concentration of hotels for tourists are in these 4 areas. So, if you were ever a tourist here, you’ll return to what was familiar first.
I’ve lived in La Jolla, University City and Sorrento Valley/Mesa and I’ve never lived more than 3 blocks from my previous address! We intended to move on from here but ended up falling in love with UTC’s convenience of commute, newer, fresher feel and very “San Diego” look. I also personally enjoy the UCSD factor; the students add a fun element to our culture here, very international!
We only have one true single family home community here, we’re mostly condos, contemporary apartments, townhomes and attached houses; so if you prefer suburbia, this ain’t the place. I love that my office is across the street from my home as our home is nestled in Technology Park, which offers us quiet weekends and beautiful corporate campuses and landscapes to walk our dog by.
Check back with my blog, I’ll be adding many details in 2017 about this community which features a major mall, corporate office parks, a financial district, a major university campus, luxury hotels and even some great hiking trails…all while being 20 minutes to Downtown or Carlsbad (on a Sunday J ). We’re also 10 minutes to world famous Torrey Pines State Beach, Hiking Trails and Torrey Pines Golf Course. We also have many great restaurants and shops here!
