Ending Unwanted Subscriptions

By

Real estate professionals often accumulate a variety of services, subscriptions and products, which become repetitively billed on their credit cards each month.  These subscriptions may have seemed of benefit when first acquired, but are no longer.

In past years, I had signed up for several subscriptions, services and products.  Eventually, I found most were no longer meeting my needs.

When I looked at my credit card bill, I realized I was forking over a considerable amount each month for these unused products.  HOWEVER, the catch came when I tried to cancel, and wasn't easily finding company contact information.

In some cases, I found no phone number; or easy access to the billing party.  I began spending an inordinate amount of time trying to find the originator of the billing - because I had been originally phone or internet solicited, I hadn't make first contact and didn't have their phone numbers or addresses - even when I visited their websites.

A solution I came up with which worked for me, and may work for you as well.  I contacted my credit card issuer, and asked that they change credit card numbers for me, and to not allow those who had billed to my old credit card number to bill to the new one.

I did have valid service providers, which I needed to contact, and provide with my new card number - but all others were shut off.

That way, a biller needs to contact me in the future, if they wish to try continuing services with me, rather than simply billing automatically, without easily providing information for canceling services.

It worked!

Came here from Debbie reblog. For me changing a card is a disaster.I would rather follow Elizabeth's advice here.

We had our card information  stolen, and got a new card. Called providers, went online to make changes on accounts, where they required you to make changes, and it was not easy. We have a subscription with Adobe, and for 2 weeks we were trying to make a change, and every time couple of days later it would tell me that the account is not updated, and at one point we lost the service, and I could not do anything. Had to call, and then for several hours still was "paralyzed". And two weeks later the bank called and asked if we had made a few purchases, which we clearly did not make, so we had to go through all of this again.

I hear you, very frustrating!  Credit cards are a great convenience but sometimes a curse!

Good morning Marte Cliff ,

It is hard to cancel subscriptions and some times the only way to end the vicious billing automatically is to change your credit card number and force them to call you for renewing!

Terrific post, Myrl! I think many people get trapped into buying subscriptions and when they decide to cancel, they can't because there is no paper trail or way to know how to cancel them. I wish there was a call to action from our local Congressman to share information like this to put together some type of bill to protect the consumer and go after those companies.

I have one product that I sell by subscription, and people have no trouble canceling (they just write me and I see that its done that day) but do have trouble renewing when their card expires. Several have had to start all over because Pay Pal wouldn't accept the new end date on their cards.

Hi Myrl

I suspect we all struggle with this in one form or another. The things I hate are those that start off free, and then start charging you IF you don't cancel, rather than only charging IF you opt to go forward. I watch this stuff carefully - I have an income and expenses spreadsheet that shows everything, and it really becomes obvious when something is getting paid every month and bringing no value, and so it's easy to do what needs to be done.

Your tip is a good one for those times when you do not have the vendor info. I have called our bank or the credit card company a number of times on charges to get whatever vendor info they can see or to protest a charge when necessary.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents I figured everyone all over would call you, not just in your area. Another tip...alert your bookkeeper (as I just did) to keep an eye out for all recurring charges.

There aren't very many Sacramento Realtors on AR, :) Mostly just me and Myrl, Margaret. Although a tip for everybody else is when you sign up for a new service, take a screen shot or save the email. It will save many headaches down the road.

Myrl, I am faced from time to time with the same problems, being charged for no longer needed or wanted service, even if I had kept the number and contact info. It gets resolved eventually, but not without several hours spent on the phone. I keep a spreadsheet with all the charges and review monthly, like Jeff Dowler does, and it helps be aware of the ROI of various services.

Myrl, that brings flashbacks to some annual services. There was fine print that I needed to cancel 30 days prior to expiration or it would continue for another year. Some such thing. I finally wrestled it to the ground but not before they put me on the credit report for non-payment! I think we finally worked it out. I am VERY careful what I sign up for now and NEVER for something that starts out free and then kicks in later.

These canceling service with many service providers is made very difficult. I got rid of one cell phone company but had to endure about 8 hours on the phone with at least 8 closers whose jib is to convince you to stay as a customer.

a couple of years ago I attended an event and added my business card to several "door prize" drawings.  NEVER AGAIN.  Literally before I was out of the parking lot I think they had sold my email to hundreds of people.  I now have event business cards with no email address on them.
