Fhoto Friday - Costa Rica Rain Forest

Besides my fascination with the Panama Canal locks, one of our favorite adventures during our recent journey to the Caribbean was exploring the rain forest in Costa Rica. The sloughs were very difficult to see, being so far up in the trees but, the butterflies and frogs were everywhere and much nearer to us! The Monarch butterflies were so striking - this is one of my favorite shots.

Monarch in Costa RicaHave a great weekend everyone!

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat - it's absolutely worth the visit!  The terrain is gorgeous, as is the water there!  The wildlife was as well!  You should definitely make the trip!

I thought of you, Sheila Anderson, as we were trapsing through the rain forest! The creatures  we saw were FAR tamer than your last vacation though!  ;-)

Oddly enough, Endre Barath, Jr. - we were sailing with a couple who had 'raised' and tagged hundreds of Monarchs.  They didn't go on this tour with us but, the entire time I was there, I was looking for tags so I could tell her what I found!  I never saw a single one!  I couldn't wait to get back to the boat to show her the hundreds of pictures I got there.

We don't see a lot of them in our area so, I'm always dazzled by them when I do see them!

Hi Debe, that must be a trip of a lifetime to see these colorful creatures in a tropical rainforest.  The closest we've been is in the Butterfly exhibit in Seattle, which is a tropical indoor experience - not quite the same I'm sure!  John and Kat

Thanks for sharing a little more of your trip Debe.

My mom is a Monarch butterfly enthusiast so I hear a lot about their migration, good to hear that you could spot some of them in their winter home.

We certainly did, Ed Silva - 10 days was just a bit much for me!  Next time, we won't attempt to cover so much territory!

Hi Alexander- Slocum - oh, it was one of my favorite parts of the trip - I loved seeing the creatures in their natural habitat!  They also had some native snakes in aquariums - those did not interest me at ALL!    :-)

Kasey & John Boles and the team at Jon Gosche Real Estate, LLC - oh, I do too! We have a lot of tree frogs in our area during the springtime and they are incredibly vociferous!  LOL

We have an irrigation canal behind our house and when there is water in it in spring & summer they come around and they are loud!  I open our bedroom windows at night because I love hearing it.  I feel like I'm just in nature. Debe Maxwell

Lee Potts - the new one (right beside the other two lock stations) is still under construction.  They expect completion sometime in 2018.

Bob Crane - we sailed with a couple who were also enthusiasts and had even been involved in tagging hundreds of Monarchs.  She was absolutely thrilled to see these in their winter habitat too!  It was truly spectacular to see them all - I mean thousands of a variety of butterflies.  We never saw any of her tagged Monarchs though but, we certainly did a serious search for them!!
