I've always associated that term to the days that I shot pool for beer money about forty years ago. When you shoot pool for money (usually beer money) you not only need to know what you are doing but you also need to know what the balls are going to do when you call your shot. I never did like slop pool, if my money was on the line I wanted my opponent to call his shot EXACTLY. I don't know if the term poke and hope originated with sloppy pool players or if Johnny was once told to poke that hornets nest to see if it was active and hope that it wasn't. 
Investing in Real Estate should not be a game or challenge involving poke and hope.
