The Surrender of Clarksville Commemoration at Ft. Defiance
Another year has passed and the celebration is coming up for the 155th Anniversary of the Surrender of Clarksville at Ft. Defiance. Clarksville TN was an important post in during the Civil War and lots of history surrounds the area. History buffs know that Ft. Defiance was a fort controlled by the Union Troops and Confederate Army during the Civil War Period.
In fact it went back and forth a couple of times with the Union Army having major control and of course the ultimate winner. Clarksville is a river town and the fort had a critical viewing point at the fort to see approaching boats navigating the Cumberland River. February 25 from 10am to 3pm you can get in the moment and experience what it may have been like during that time.
The Anniversary Commemoration of the Surrender of Clarksville is held at Ft. Defiance Civil War Park & Interpretive Center located on 120 Duncan Street. The views of Clarksville are still impressive.
There will be musket firings and soldiers and people in period costumes. Bring the whole family because it's free. Again, the date and time is Saturday, February 25 from 10am to 3pm. This event is performed with help from the Friends of Ft. Defiance. They are an active group that love history in the area.
The park is open 7 days a week (except special holidays). Admission is free. See the short 16 minute film about the fort's history and it's impact on Clarksville. Guided tours are available for school and larger groups. Call 931-472-3351 or visit the website.
