January 29th is always a day of reflection for me. These are the lessons I've learned in life that shaped me into the person I am today.  The road less traveled always gives me more than I asked. It gives me courage and strength. Hope is our future. Life is worth living without regrets. This is a photo of my last big hike at Glacier National Park in October 2016 at Logan's Pass. It will not be my last. This photo depicts all the roads I've traveled. I've traveled the high road, the low road, treacherous ones, scary ones, wide roads and narrow, some were lit and others kept me in the dark, there were bumpy roads, and roads I felt I was going to fall off a cliff but I kept going. I always remembered what a stranger, a man from India, whose only possession he had was the coins in his pocket told me back in 1988. Life is worth living. We are all put on this earth for a reason, created to help one another not cause harm.

Lessons Learned

  • A spouse, a partner, a loved one isn't perfect - For better or worse, love them anyway.
  • A child, teenager, student, kids on the block - Forgive them, they have a lot to learn.
  • A sibling, roommate, or step brothers & sisters - Be a team, not an enemy in life and death.
  • A parent, guardian or step-parent - They lived a life you didn't know, show compassion.
  • A friend, an acquaintance, a neighbor - Never take them for granted.
  • A client, consumer, or customer - Listen, be polite, and maintain professionalism.
  • A law enforcement officer, fire & rescue - Try to see the world through their eyes.
  • A politician or person in public office - Exercise your power to vote and give people a chance.
  • A soldier - Don't just wave a flag, honor them, support them, hire them, give back to your country.
  • A doctor, lawyer, or employer - None of them are gods, just people like you & me with authority.
  • A pet, an animal, bird or reptile - They are all creatures on earth with a purpose.
  • A home, a rental, apartment, or someone's home - Be glad you have a place to call home or visit.
  • A religious person - Don't judge; be humble.
  • A person who is different or difficult - Be tolerant.
  • A natural disaster - Pitch in, volunteer, show empathy, help.
  • A milestone - Celebrate.
  • A death in a family or friend - Don't be afraid of the survivors; when you say you'll be there, be there.

"Love & compassion are necessities, not luxuries.

Without them, humanity cannot survive."

--- Dalai Lama

We really connected because of things in common and have been friends ever since. You're a great friend and a gift to all of us here on ActiveRain and in the Real Estate Industry.

If you haven't yet read the Paradoxical Commandments by Dr. Ken Keith, it is so worth the read....just google it.

Well said Patricia.  Life is too short to be mean and uncaring about our fellow man.  In this time when there is so much hate, division and intolerance we must all remember the ties of humanity that bind us to one another and learn to practice kindness.

Thank you!

We all travel a variety of roads. You have chosen to learn from those journeys. Your list of lessons no doubt have impacted your life.

Your list should challenge us to find the lessons from our journey.

You are right, we all have a purpose in life.

Thanks

Ed Silva - The truth is, I don't think anyone really knows what they got until it's all gone. People, especially family are our most precious assets. Children are the fruits of our labor. We have but one heart and that's all we'll ever get - just one. Let's fill it up with love and compassion.

Kathleen Luiten and everyone else here on ActiveRain. I truly appreciate your lovely comments. We all have our own mountains to climb, don't we? Yet, I find it's the ascent of the climb, the tedious time it takes to finish associated with the emergence, the knowledge something good is at the summit, that gives us the ability to gain freedom from whatever it was that was weighing us down when we started. The roads we travel are the patterns we make for ourselves. I think the higher we go and keep pushing at a steady pace often posits a hierarchy of values. And that was my point, lessons learned...

Good Morning Debbie Reynolds - I almost hesitated to post it because I didn't know how it was going to be perceived. But the truth is January 29th was a day of reflection for me. When I sat down to take my mind on something else, I didn't know what I was going to write. Then the fingers started tapping the keyboard and everything just poured out of me just the way it was written.

Knowing now what everyone thought I'm thinking the inspiration for this post was spiritual. I was just an instrument and a messenger...

Susan Haughton - Thank you for your critique and I'm glad you liked the photo. I will never forget that spot I stood when I took the photograph or how I felt that day.

I love your list!  Being compassionate and respecting others goes a very long way.  And yes, no one is perfect. We all have faults and differences.  It's how we treat each other that makes a difference.

Jan Green - I really am beginning to believe it's the flaws that we have that make us most beautiful. The outward appearance tells us nothing about the people we see face-to-face. We all need to dig a little deeper and appreciate the people that come into and out of our lives.

Thanks, Jan!
