Caution: Moose Can Be Cranky and Dangerous!

Moose not as warm and cuddly as they look.

Many of my friends ask questions like “how do you protect yourself from bears out there?”.

I answer that bears are seldom a problem, and certainly not worth carrying a heavy gun around for, but the Moose can be a real problem.

Though bear will generally run and hide, moose will often attack and it is best to have a good sized tree to get behind if you get too close to a moose.

Moose have adapted over the centuries to be mortal enemies of Wolves and thus will do their best to stomp any dogs they see as well.

Any sled dog owner that you meet will tell you how much they dread meeting a moose on the trail with a team of dogs.

Occasionally a moose will find a dog yard and cause havoc, but most deadly meetings are along the remote trails.

When the snow is deep, moose will often use the sled trails to travel since it is easy walking.

When they see a team of excited dogs approaching, rather than run, the moose will charge through the team of dogs attempting to stomp as many as possible.

In this video, Brent Sass, a Minnesota native and winner of last year’s Yukon Quest 1000 mile sled dog race relates a few encounters that happened on the trail.

Hi Bob Crane I love animals but never thought of a moose as warm and cuddly, although my husband is kind of a moose .

My sister and her husband lived in Alaska for 27 years.  They were there during the big quake in 1964.  They talked about standing in the doorway, looking out across the land as the earth shook.  A moose was mad at a tree because it wouldn't stand still, and kept butting it!

Bob I've run across a few moose over the years and they're huge. One time up on Bear Tooth Pass in MT we had to stop the car and wait until a Momma Moose and her 2 babies crossed the road safely. That was a sight I will never forget.  She was very protective.
