Glen Foerd was built around 1850 by Charles Macalaster, a financier and advisor to United States Presidents from Andrew Jackson through Ulysses S. Grant. He was founder of the Village of Torresdale he built this estate on the Delaware as his summer home and called the estate Glengarry . People traveled from Washington DC to get away from the heat and visit this historic Estate on the Delaware River
Robert Foerdere, a congressman bought the estate in 1893 and changed its name to Glen Foerd. He then enlarged the house, transforming it into an Edwardian country house. The grounds were expanded to eighteen acres and landscaped in the English park tradition, including a formal rose garden.
The estate consists of the mansion, a carriage house, gate house, cottage, garden house, water tower, and a tennis court. The landscape is accented by a lily pond, statues ,river wall and steps. The remains of a boathouse are integrated into the river wall.
Beautiful art work inside by Rembrandt and Monet, just to name a few . Haskel player pipe organ also has found a home along with oriental rugs and pottery ,stained glass and so much more historical art work is inside these walls . There is so much history in this Estate on the Delaware known as Glen Foerd Mansion . It is open to the public
