Buying a Surface, Pricey but Worth It…
I wrote this post exactly a year ago, and after a year of daily use, I am still happy to say that is was a good investment.
This past fall I knew that it was time for a new tablet so I started doing some research early.
Asking everyone including my internet friends for advice on what the best investments were.
Lots of folks suggested an Apple pad, others recommended an Android Galaxy, and a few others suggested a few of the new Windows based systems.
A few of the Window fans suggested the Surface, though they thought they were a bit pricey for their taste and budget.
Well after weighing my options over and over I decided on going the Windows route, it would be so nice to have the same software on my tablet as on my computer.
Mid December I went down to the store and shelled out $230 for a Nextbook 11 with a Windows operating system.
I liked it, especially the Windows 10 operating system and the fact that I could load my Windows programs on this and access the same projects from either my laptop or tablet via the cloud drive.
But there were a few problems with the machine, kind of poor design with a keyboard that would not open past about 90 degrees, and after a week it stopped charging.
After a quick internet search it was clear what the problem was, and with the aid of a jackknife I could pry off the cover and disconnect and reconnect the battery which would likely get it working again.
But, with a new system screwing up already, I thought it may be time to make a different choice.
One nice thing about buying locally, all I had to do was wipe the memory on the system a few times and then return it to the store, and then start shopping again.
So this time it was time to check out these Surface units that I had heard others including my son salivate over.
Only one place in town that had any, so on to Best Buy I headed on New Year’s Eve just before closing.
I was a little shocked at the prices, one of these units cost more than all of the computers that I had bought for my staff earlier in the week!!!
About this time my youngest son showed up at the store, knowing that I would be needing a pep talk when I saw the prices.
I told the kid at Best Buy that he would need to convince me if he wanted me to invest that much in a simple tablet; “what makes this worth more than a stack of laptops?”
The kid did his best and between him and my son they did get me to pry open my wallet about an hour after closing time.
Well after working with this new tool for nearly a month, I have to admit that it was worth every dollar.
