I am a big believer in tipping. I love the idea, tip for a job well done. I tip most people I believe are working low paying jobs. I generally tip doormen, taxi drivers, bartenders, waiters, casino dealers, bellmen, maids, my landscaper, cleaning lady, everyone that helps make my life easier. I even tip the girl at the pizza place that brings the pizza two feet from the window to me. I appreciate the fact that rather than stand on the corner with a sign begging for money, these people are working hard and they deserve what little I can help.
I went to Las Vegas this weekend. I am always sure to tip dealers. The reason is a little different, first dealers do in fact work for tips for the most part, second is they generally will help you if you are about to do something silly. I love to play craps, although as far as the betting goes I am more advanced than a beginner but far, far from a pro. When I was taught to play, I was always taught to bet for the dealers, if for no other reason than at some point you are going to need them. While I was playing craps, I bet multiple times for the dealers, at one point the "stickman" asked me for $15 so he could place a bet for me. He did it and a few throws of the dice later the shooter crapped out. I was disappointed until the dealer handed me $1,000, the bet he had made for me paid off. (I am currently trying to figure out exactly what he bet).
Earlier in the day, I played blackjack with a young wealthy guy. We were playing at a $10 table but he was playing $1,000 per hand. He lost about $10,000 in the 20 minutes I sat there, the pit boss told me he had lost over $100,000 an hour earlier. He had no idea how to play, he was taking cards when he should not and holding when he should take cards, he referred to doubling down as "greedy".
As I walked away from the table, it occurred to me that he had never tipped anyone, including the waitress who brought his drinks. This person, who was obviously very well off, tipped no one, like he was entitled to their hospitality. While I am not a big believer in Karma, I had to ask myself, I wonder how much different his loss sheets would look if he would learn to tip those working hard to entertain him.
