Maybe it’s a sign of desperation – marketers becoming so frustrated by a lack of response to their offers that they lose their common sense.
Last week my email brought “scolding” messages from someone I’ve never done business with – and never will. He seemed to think that since he wanted to revamp my website, I had an obligation to hire him for the job.
His idiocy reminded me of a time a year or so ago when I started receiving multiple emails from two different Internet marketers who had the same attitude. They were shooting themselves in the foot so badly that I became fascinated. I had to scan each day’s mail just to see what they’d come up with next.
One set was from a man who had been sending me a variety of offers for quite some time. Frustrated by my non-response, he wrote citing the experts’ advice that it takes 5 “touches” to get a new prospect to take action. (This is generally believed to be true.) Then he told me that he’d written to me 11 times – so it was time for me to get moving!
He may have had a good product to sell, but I wasn’t interested in branching out into a new venture. And since I didn’t even know the man, I saw no reason why I needed to write and explain this to him.
His effort to “guilt” me into trying his scheme fell flat and definitely lowered his credibility in my eyes.
But his messages were mild compared to one that was so stupid that I saved it in a “bloopers” file.
It read:
What the hell’s the matter with you?
Are you happy being broke?
If he seriously thought I was going to buy into his offer after that message, he was seriously crazy.
Can you imagine the response you’d get if you used this approach with real estate?
