If You Scold Me, You’ve Lost Me

By

Maybe it’s a sign of desperation – marketers becoming so frustrated by a lack of response to their offers that they lose their common sense.

scolding womanLast week my email brought “scolding” messages from someone I’ve never done business with – and never will. He seemed to think that since he wanted to revamp my website, I had an obligation to hire him for the job.

His idiocy reminded me of a time a year or so ago when I started receiving multiple emails from two different Internet marketers who had the same attitude. They were shooting themselves in the foot so badly that I became fascinated. I had to scan each day’s mail just to see what they’d come up with next.

One set was from a man who had been sending me a variety of offers for quite some time. Frustrated by my non-response, he wrote citing the experts’ advice that it takes 5 “touches” to get a new prospect to take action. (This is generally believed to be true.) Then he told me that he’d written to me 11 times – so it was time for me to get moving!

He may have had a good product to sell, but I wasn’t interested in branching out into a new venture. And since I didn’t even know the man, I saw no reason why I needed to write and explain this to him.

His effort to “guilt” me into trying his scheme fell flat and definitely lowered his credibility in my eyes.

But his messages were mild compared to one that was so stupid that I saved it in a “bloopers” file.

It read:

What the hell’s the matter with you?

Are you happy being broke?

If he seriously thought I was going to buy into his offer after that message, he was seriously crazy.

Can you imagine the response you’d get if you used this approach with real estate?

Trying to take a hidden agenda and make it seem otherwise is hard work and in vain for those that have any common sense. Case in point here

Richie Alan Naggar - I think common sense was a missing ingredient in those messages.

LOL, I got one yesterday telling me they could not find me on a website that I HAD to be on. They were going to show me how to get on the first page of a website that has nothing to do with my marketing strategy. I ignored it and they followed up with a phone call to ask me if I had bothered to read the email.

If you look at it with humor, it really is quite funny! Annoying nonetheless, but quite funny!

Yes Sharon Tara - and it's more fun to look at it with humor. Better for our health, too.

Arrogance and condescension is the quickest way for me to tell you to go to Seoul (South Korea, closest thing to  hell on Earth in my experience).

Marte Cliff I believe these people are indicative of the near-complete breakdown of our social structure. They fail to realize that they are not in control and are frustrated by the negative environment they have chosen to ply their trade.

This reminds me of an email I get frequently from a lead generation site which affects me in a similar way - It says something like, "such and such property was just listed and they didn't call you." The takeaway, I suppose, is that if you had been signed up with this company, you would have known owner was selling or they would have your contact info. It rubs me the wrong way and I just delete the emails. Don't try to make me feel bad and then ask for my business. It's a wacky concept. I wonder if it works.

Jill Sackler - it must work often enough to encourage them to keep doing it.

I am actually laughing because the same thing happened to me just within the last few months. Wanting to revamp my sales and marketing strategy. He actually asked me in an email what the hell was my problem. I replied; What's wrong with you cursing me in an email?" I guess you haven't made your goal. You know what with emails like this you won't." I unsubscribed to all future emails and forwarded his to corporate. Wonder if he's met his goal. Right now I really don't give a rodent's derriere!! Great feature!

Theresa Akin  Good for you for taking action! We might hope that this individual is no longer employed with that company. But who knows - that might be their method of operation.

Isn't it amazing that many telemarketers don't even know their target market?

"Hey, I saw your website . . ." Oh?, which one. . . silence.

"Hi, I was online and saw your webiste.  Are you a Realtor?" . . . Did you read my profile?  . . . Silence.

"Would you log into our website at www ..."  Wouldn't it be good to know if I am near a computer first?  . . . Silence.

And my favorite:  "We can get you on the first page of Google!" Oh, what does your company do again? "Search Engine Optimization".  Oh really, then why doesn't YOUR COMPANY show up on the first page of Google?

Feb 09, 2017 12:31 PM
Marte Cliff

Oh, I love that last come-back Jim Paulson - why indeed?

You would think marketers would do a better job of targeting prospects. I haven't been an agent since 2002, but I get ads offering to sell me leads or improve my listing presentations.

I get inundated with calls and emails from these types of solicitors, along with many other types of solicitors.  It's at the point that I screen my calls.  What they don't understand is I don't have a need for their product or service.  If I need it, then I'll search for it.  Most likely, the person whom wrote "Are you happy being broke?" meant it for themself.  Why on earth would you spend so much time for anybody whom won't even respond once to you, nor have you ever held any contact with that individual.  They may be good at Marketing, but seem to be lousy at Sales.  Have a great day, Marte!

Feb 09, 2017 01:00 PM
Marte Cliff

Mike Bjork - I can see keeping someone on your e-mail list forever if they've shown interest in what you have to offer - just not hounding them when they don't respond in your preferred time-frame.

The trick is to keep sending good information to the entire list until those who weren't ready become ready.

This notion actually raised a smile for me Marte. Just another example of how common sense is really not at all common anymore. I smiled at the idea of using this tactic with potential buyers and sellers. I'm 100% sure that would not end well.

Marte, so much of modern marketing puzzles me. It's crass, ignorant and down right rude. It always bothered me to hang up on people, but I've actually gotten pretty comfortable with it. I just filter the email morons.

Feb 09, 2017 07:23 PM

I agree Mike Cooper - I used to try to wait for a break in the spiel and then say I wasn't interested. Now I'm perfectly comfortable with just hanging up - ESPECIALLY when it's a recorded message or when there's no one there when I answer. What? I'm supposed to wait until they come on the line?

Not likely!

Wow, it makes you wonder if they do it just to see if it provokes you to respond. Like a test. What a horrible way to approach a sale though - it just goes to show that numbers aren't everything. It's about rapport, relationships, and being a real person. It's a fairly laughable situation if you think about it - he's obviously inexperienced.  :-)

Yes, lots of bad "sales" tactics in use. I don't need a lecture or insult from an arrogant, incompetent jerk. They should read Dale Carnegie's classic book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People".

If they have a website, you can leave a negative customer review.

For email spammers, my spam filter and rules do a good job of sending this junk right to the trash bin. For a persistent spammer, I also forward a copy to the FTC at spam@UCE.gov (Unsolicited Commercial Email).

For flagrant cases, I also send a canned Cease and Desist email notice and keep a copy of the spam in a Spam Evidence folder.

For telemarketers, I use MrNumber and TrueCaller phone apps to block spammers. If one does get thru, I interrupt quickly and say, "put my phone number on your do not call list and hang up." Then I block and report the number. I record phone calls as evidence using Call Recorder.

Feb 11, 2017 07:43 AM
Marte Cliff

Jerry Lucas - You're really on top of this! I don't usually forward things on to spam@UCE.gov unless it looks like a phishing scam.

As for the junk folder - mine does pick up on some of this, but I'm careful to browse through before deleting the junk, because a couple of times mail from clients has landed there.

Marte,  The recorded messages drive me crazy, as well as the tons of soliciation emails.  Do they really think people listen to them?  I guess so or else it costs them very ittle to keep trying in hopes of hitting one.
