What a kitchen can reveal about personalities.

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with PMI. Destin

I have always been a firm believer in the the size and condition of a kitchen can tell you a lot about the personalities of the owners.  This is not any type of psychology but I do believe the following items are true.  IT IS A FIRM RULE THAT THE SIZE OF THE KITCHEN DETERMINES THE SIZE OF THE PARTY.  BUT....

1.  Wide open kitchens are generally owned by open minded people who are high on the scale with regard to enjoying interation and influencing people.  They like to entertain and their life style does center around the kitchen and living areas.

2.  Narrow galley styles are a result of lack of space in a home and poor planning in my opinion.  I don't see very many of this type these days but the owners typically do not do much entertaining and if they do it is a carry out/catered affair.

3.  You can tell if the owners like to cook if the kitchen by the signs of use and the number of appliances on the counter.  Well designed kitchens, are generally well used and do show signs of wear over time.

4.  Homes with children and pets show obvious signs of both or either.  I have kicked toys and dog bowls numerous times while I have showed homes.

Kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most important elements in selling a home.  These are the areas where you almost immediately get a return on your investment if you make a upgrade.  I generally advise owners to make these upgrades early so they can enjoy these benefits while they still live in the home.  Please contact me for more home improvement advice if you think a move is in your future.

Peter,

Good points here.  We know a kitchen designer who designs based on the personality of the chef in the house.  He has interesting names for each design, like stage personality...where the chef likes to be on the stage, big island facing out.  A

I like a big, open kitchen that is closed off from the rest of the house... call me old-fashioned, but I really don't like or want people in my kitchen. I like to entertain in my great room and my dining room.

I agree ...  large open kitchens and large updated bathrooms are great for getting homes sold.

Agree that updayes should be done early to get the most value out of them for the buyer.

Now those are some observations I have never thought about, Peter. I know I am a kitchen person and like one that is inviting.
