Ever hear of the old Call the police on the Realtor trick?

Real Estate Agent with Godzyk Real Estate Services NH License 033394

You said you wanted some excitement? I Show up at a new listing. Home is vacant. I walk around this Manchester NH area home taking picture of the outside. I trudge through the near 2 feet of snow to the door, unlock the lockbox and go inside. I walk through the home, taking pictures of every room and making notes of what it needs. Some time passes and i see men out the rear, to the side and coming up the walk. I go to the front door, see it is a police officer and open the door telling him who i am. Boom, bang, shuffle, "CODE 4 it is the Realtor."

Let's see: Well dressed, clip board, camera, lock box... and the neighbor calls the police for a robbery in process.

Most neighbors ignore what is going on when a house is being stripped of copper or vandalized. So i was grateful for a neighbor looking out for the home.

The lead officer was nice, understanding and I thanked him. Those yelling....... well, it wasn't needed.... The lead officer thanked me for coming out and identifying myself from the start. They had a chuckle, I got high blood pressure.

IN THE END this is not just a job it is an adventure.  With a marketing plan in place, market analysis complete, cleaning crew hired.... This home will be available to see soon and will not take me long to get it under contract.

And how was your day?

I always try to do that Dick and Dixie Sells but this neighbor i guess was a few Houses away. I had only been to the immediate house next to and then across.

Did you qualify the police to see if they wanted to purchase?

And your advertising could read....'Nice safe neighborhood where neighbors look out for each other'.

Then another enforcement would come after you.

I think it's great that neighbors are watchful - I want them to be, as long as it's not intrusive. I've never had the police show up when previewing a home...yet.

That's funny and is the exact reason I had magnets made for my car to identify me as a realtor so the neighbors didn't think I was breaking into someones home. Never a dull moment in real estate.

This is a new one for me. Your feature caught my eye because I live in Manchester, MD and have been to Manchester, NH once, back in 2009. Visited the Harley dealership while attending Laconia Bike Week. Luckily, never had a run-in with the police. Glad you had a postive outcome!

Dear Scott,

Now there is an idea for the robbery-minded: dress up as a Realtor. Luckily, I have never had this adventure before. You could probably skip the caffeine that afternoon, right?

It can be a really good thing to have such observant neighbors. Can be a pain too but in general it shows they care about their neighborhood.

I've had a number of times when I see a neighbor eyeing me because I'm making multiple trips out the door with filled-to-the-brim boxes, big trash bags and all sorts of oddities. And I'm bound by my code of ethics to ignore him/her, because if I wander over and explain, I'm violating my client's privacy. So I'm just waiting...
