Emma as born in Kovno, Russian Empire to Abraham and Taube back in 1869. Her father was a strict and had a violent temper. He used violence to punish his children and Emma was the most headstrong one of them. Her mother did little to stop Emma’s punishment which also added to the tension.
When she was seven the family moved to Konigsberg where she enrolled in school for the first time. One teacher used a ruler on her hands for being a disobedient student. Another teacher tried to sexually assault her. She had to quit school to support the family after her father had opened several businesses which all failed
In 1885 she convinced her father to let her move to America, she settled in Rochester, New York. She worked as a seamstress sewing overcoats for more than 10 hours a day making $2.50 a week. She married a co-worker Jacob only to find out he was impotent. In less than a year the marriage ended in divorce.
Immediately after the divorce she moved to New York City where she met Alexander and Johann, and as they say the rest is history. I’m writing about Emma Goldman. She became a writer and renowned lectures on women’s right and social issues. She was imprisoned several times for “inciting to riot”, for illegally distributing information about birth control for women. She died in 1940 at 70 in Toronto, Canada.
