Why I love my job... Agent Brenda's tale

By
Real Estate Agent with Miranda Real Estate Group, Inc. NYS 10401214143

During February, we've been asked to identify what we love about our jobs. First and foremost, I love that it’s not a job.  It's a fulfilling career.

Let's be honest here... Real Estate wasn't my first choice. For those of you who know me even a little bit, you know that my professional world began - & included nearly 2 decades - in healthcare. I worked with many incredible people & often did go home feeling good about the day. However, thinking back to my reaction when the weekday alarm went off, I can't say that I was in love with my "8 - 5"...

Fast forward through two layoffs within two years.... salary gone, benefits gone and a cranky economy upon us. What's a girl to do? Get her Real Estate license! WHAT?! Sure! Why not right? (And if just by reading that you have a "is she crazy?" look on your face, don't worry - I got a lot of that at the time!).

SO.... in July 2009 I got my license, found my broker, connected with my mentor, picked up some business cards and ......... NOTHING! My skeptical but supportive spouse hung in there with me while I trained and practiced and did everything I was told to do to make it happen and... nothing did. I preserved though, learned the definition of tenacity and, in December, got my first paycheck. The next one followed in March.

When I mention I'm a Realtor®, I often get a "Oh that must be so much fun!" kind of response. Sound fun yet? Let’s be honest, in the beginning it wasn’t. But failure was not an option. And luckily, it hasn’t been the outcome either. Now in my 8th business year, I’m proud to be an annual “top 10” agent" (this year #4!!) in our company and more importantly, am the trusted advisor that my clients turn to for their next chapter.

Now, when that alarm goes off I can truly say that I greet the arrival of the new day with enthusiasm. Why?

* I'm a people person. My husband says I wake up looking for someone to talk to. Real Estate obviously fits that personality trait. I have met some wonderful people in this business and truly enjoy watching “kids” become adults with their new role as a homeowner, couples becomes families, babies become kids who win spelling bees, and couples embrace a new chapter....  Every house gets "a story".  Houses become homes and I love being part of that journey.

* I'm an educator. "Back in the day", I enjoyed teaching 1:1 and to large crowds. Now, I enjoy passing along the in and outs of the homebuying process to clients & pride myself on being a supportive agent whose clients truly know what’s happening throughout the process.

* I'm a team player. Few people realize just how many disciplines are involved in the home buying process. I enjoy collaborating with trustworthy & efficient professionals and am grateful for the network of attorneys, lenders and inspectors I've created to work with my clients & support their homebuying process.

* I'm a problem solver. Things happen. And they can happen at any stage of a real estate transaction. And when they do, I'm ready to find a solution. I have countless stories in this realm... Let’s just say that whether it’s a bad septic system, a credit profile not quite ready to purchase, a tree on a roof the week before closing, or an over-enthusiastic family member trying to ‘help’, it doesn’t stop me from working to make my client's goal a reality.

* I'm a server. My client's needs are my focus. My goal is to create a "raving fan". If that means getting my "hands dirty" (and that takes all kinds of forms in real estate!), I'm going to.

* I'm independent & motivated. This business is just that -- a business. I'm the CEO of me! If I want to sell a little or sell a lot, it's up to me! I work at home, in my car, & on vacation.  I'm unemployed at the start of each day & begin each year with no idea what my salary will be...YIKES!

It's not for everyone but it's for me!

And I love that my career path lead me here.

Ready to make YOUR real estate goal a reality?  We should talk!

We love the authenticity behind your story, Brenda Mayette!  Yes, oftentimes we end up in places we didn't expect.  It's how you view and respond to it that counts.  One of our favorite sayings (by one of our favorite inspirational figures, the late Dr. Wayne Dyer) is "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change"...looks like you're doing beautifully.  Happy Valentine's Day!

I was told from the beginning that this is a business and needed to be treated as such.  With my background, I believed it and also was groomed to "do as you're told".  Luckily, it has worked.  Thank you for the visit Debbie Reynolds

Brenda, It was the reality of ongoing corporate layoffs that brought me into real estate as a dual career person.  I still keep working my engineering job, but I've watched so many people come and go over the last 25 years that I never want to be at the mercy of a company for my ability to pay my bills.  Bill
