Views of Clark County - When Neighbors have Chickens

By
Industry Observer with Nature As Neighbors

Living in the country has many perks - open space, green vistas, and chickens! Yes, chickens. Even if you don't raise chickens yourself, they are usually just an acre or two away from you. From the early morning crow of the rooster, to the regular clucking of the hens - chickens add a decidedly rural feeling to the area.

When you see chickens roaming around someone's property, you might assume they are low-maintenance.  But they actually require a lot of work and care to keep clean and healthy. So we have opted, for now, not to have them on our property.  But we see and hear them all the time at our neighbors', and that's fine with us.  Recently, one of our chicken-raising neighbors asked if we wanted to be in the loop of a regular fresh egg supply. Yes!  So now we have all the benefits of chickens - daily fresh eggs - without the work! We appreciate the bright yolks, firm whites, and they are great for baking too.

So in addition to the normal benefits of living in the country - clean air, privacy, and "elbow room for the soul", you can add fresh eggs to the list.  They are often just a good neighbor away. If you're interested in discovering the many benefits of living with Nature As Neighbors, call us today, we love to share our experiences.

Ah Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I am jealous. If I had chickens my HOA would run me out of town.

Good morning, Debb and Bernie -- It seems you have some very hospitable neighbors.   You can actually find some chickens in some more urban areas now -- I think that's an interesting development.   Happy Wednesday.

Hi Debb - I just went on a staging consultation and they had chickens, too, which is very rare of our area. Nothing liking like fresh eggs!

Debb,

There is nothing like "fresh" eggs.  They are amazing to eat and to cook with!  there are so many reasons to have "elbow room for the soul!"And chicken manure is great for plants!  It is a win/win.  A

Hi Debb- You know...I don't think I've ever eaten fresh eggs (as in straight from the chicken.)  Now that's neighborly.

Chickens have been very popular out here as well.  We have a neighbor not too far away who raises chickens.  They are always on the loose and I wonder why they don't wander off.  I asked the neighbor if she would be willing to sell some of the eggs and she said no - but she gave me 6 fresh ones that day.

Debb, fresh eggs are the best. They have so much more flavor than what I get from the store. I think you're having the best of both worlds, fresh eggs, can see and hear the chickens but, don't have to take care of them :)

Hi Debb & Bernie - We could have chickens in the city - which I'm sure the dogs would love - but no roosters. Here in the county, we could have roosters too, but our HOA says no to both. The guy up the road has an egg stand, though.

I live in a sidewalks, curbs, gutters neighborhood.  My neighbors and I often share produce - Tomatoes, Oranges, Lemons, Tangerines, Zucchini.  I just learned the other day that we can keep a few chickens.  I was considering it, but I know they take a lot of care.

Debb & Bernie I used to have a county home and the best thing about it was the fresh eggs and cream my neighbor would so kindly bring over on a regular basis.  Love it!!

Debb, you do have the best of both worlds, yet you don't have the mess.   Denver and most metro cities can have chickens too, but neighborhoods with HOA are still banning them.
