Ask an Ambassador: why should I care about my most popular posts?

Earlier this week I saw a question that asked "what is your most popular post?" I saw a lot of people that I respect a lot who said I don't have time to look for that, who cares, what does it matter etc. Well I thought I might talk about why it matters, at least to me.

First, defining popular post for me has zero to do with comments.  I love my AR peeps, but your comments don't keep me coming back here. I do love learning and reading your posts too though.  But for me, popular is those that have the most views.  And even knowing which have been my most popular on social media where I always use the short URL to keep up those click through numbers.

These are my posts with the most clicks. And while some of them are informational and I'm glad people are reading them they don't always bring me business, but I feel they show the knowledge I have about my market and real estate. However the post that just keeping bringing me business from this list is the Forest Lake Village post. It's one of my "farm" areas and one I know well.  And I've sold a LOT of property in there over the past 25 years.

Watching that post climb and the phone continuing to ring with "I'd like to see this house in Forest Lake Village" phone calls has lead me to do more and more subdivisions posts.  I have several that have hit more than 5000 click throughs in the years since I did that one.  So knowing which post that brings business is indeed important to me.

I'm not trying to win a popularity contest here I'm growing my business. And I suspect if you go and click on your views tab and figure out which posts with the most views over and over that can directly bring you business and write more posts like that you can grow your business too.

I also like to know which of the posts that I share on social media get the most traffic there, so I use the short URL when I post them on FB or twitter. The one with 770 click throughs.  If I had had twelve listings like that one I could have sold them all in the first week. I had so many offers on that property. It ended after a bidding war selling for over list with a cash deal with no contingencies.  So I know that when I list a property with land with it that social media really will work. Again, I just had to change my stats to "LIFETIME" and click on the short URL clicks heading and see which posts had the most. It only took me a few short minutes to find "my most popular" business related posts and know two things I need to do more of to get more business.

So all you "don't have time to find that" people just really want might want to re-think and figure out which posts are working for you.

Oh yes, I check the stats all the time.  It's super important for the reasons you gave (esp to know what types of posts to write more of) and also to figure out your growth/opportunity areas (not to mention to see if an article drops in the rankings.

I actively try to grow my top 10 or so articles by updating them every 6 months or so.  I also use this to determine where I should focus on social media.

I know my most popular because it's been my most popular for many years now and it just keeps growing with 172,776 views.

My second most views is 127,796 and third is 63, 958.

All three posts are on making your own Halloween costumes. Every year around September I start getting phone calls from people with questions. I've had many call to ask if I sell the costumes.

Unfortunately, I've never gotten any staging business from these posts. But their popularity makes me feel good.

Short url clicks are not so good for me. My highest is 277 and it's for a tutorial on photo editing.

Usually when I share posts on facebook I end up using the longer AR url because the short url doesn't post a picture or it wants to post a picture I don't want used. That's very frustrating.

Anna Banana Kruchten I was very surprised at the agents who were discounting it's importance.

Kasey & John Boles and the team at Jon Gosche Real Estate, LLC  you know Kasey, so much of what I use, do and know came from being inspired here at AR. Not only do I think my posts here work for me, I also believe I've learned much of the SEO information that gets Internet traffic to my site. It's a great place to learn and be inspired.

Lyn Sims you made me curious.  I still get calls even though I posted ALL the numbers for boat rentals, but I think all of mine are community and/or real estate related.

Steffy Hristova that post is 6 years old with those numbers so the longer it's out there the more people will find it

Rose Mary Justice you might want to consider getting a rain maker account so the public can find your posts. It's so worth it and before you know it you'll hit that 500k mark and it would be free again.

Jim Paulson I have to say that I've seen people successfully post until they get there and still eventually get that free account and get business moving forward, but the sooner the better for public posts is great advice.

Debbie Reynolds same here for the most part, but those subdivision posts with live links to my IDX are climbing.

Diana White-Pettis it's important to pay attention to them

Brian DeYoung you gotta get that rainmaker account and make your posts index on google and be available.

Marte Cliff back in the day when there was a "views" and "clicks" was a different tab that was true, but how many people had seen the title on the blog roll or on a google search and not clicked wasn't important so they changed it.

Sharon Tara I can understand from your mastering of costume making how that happens.  However I also know how many hours my mom spent on a pink power ranger one year that if she had sold it it would have been HUNDREDS of dollars... instead it was a labor of love for a grandchild.

Gene Mundt, IL/WI Mortgage Originator - FHA/VA/Conv/Jumbo/Portfolio/Refi  exactly... filling that need makes the phone ring.

Exactly...it would never be cost efficient to try and sell them and that is exactly what I tell people when they ask. It is a labor of love.
