On February 16, 2017, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits increased 4.6% to 1,285,000 units in January of 2017 from 1,228,000 units in December of 2016, and gained 8.2% from 1,188,000 units in January of 2016. Single family building permits were lower 2.7% to a rate of 808,000 units in January of 2017 from 830,000 units in December of 2016, and there were 446,000 multi family building permits issued in January of 2017.
Nationwide there were 1,246,000 units housing starts in January of 2017, down 2.6% from 1,279,000 units in December of 2016, but rose 10.5% from 1,128,000 units in January of 2017. Single family starts were higher 1.9% to a rate of 823,000 units in January of 2017 from 808,000 units in December of 2016, and there were 421,000 multi family building starts in January of 2017.
Nationwide there were 1,047,000 housing completions in January of 2017, increased 5.6% to 1,109,000 units in December of 2016, and lower 0.9% from 1,056,000 units in January of 2016. There were 800,000 single family completions units in January of 2017, up 4.3% from 767,000 units in December of 2016, and there were 244,000 multi family completions in January of 2017.
Regionally, housing building permits in the Northeast jumped 29.6% in January of 2017 from December of 2016, and rose 71.3% from January of 2016. In the Midwest permits increased 5.3% in January of 201 from December of 2016, but declined 4.8% from January of 2016. In the South permits were higher 9.9% in January of 2017 from December of 2016, and gained 11.5% from January of 2016. In the West permits fell 13.2% in January of 2017 from December of 2016, and decreased 6.6% from January of 2016.
