Tredyffrin Easttown Historic Homes

Whilst many of the homes in the two townships are not historic we do have several historic homes located in Tredyffrin and Easttown Townships. In fact this article on a local blog by Pattye Benson focuses on four of seven historic homes which are threatened with destruction by a developer so they can erect an apartment building.

Last year Pattye Benson persuaded CVS who are developing a site with an historic buildings on it to move their new building back within the envelope and preserve the old building in Strafford on Lancaster Avenue. Hopefully we will prevail in keeping these historic buildings from being demolished and the township will realize the need to preserve these older buildings as part of the townships heritage. We did lose a wonderful old barn for a modern MacMansion so there is considerable pressure on these historic homes.

Owning an historic home is a large responsibility, you are basically a custodian for those coming after you to preserve and look after the house in which you live which gives a view of life from an earlier time. We all like modern amenities so we understand the need to update and add today's conveniences like indoor plumbing as opposed to using an outhouse. But townships need to have rules and regulations drawn up which not only protect but also specify what an homeowner can and cannot do to an historic home.

Last year I interviewed Tim Coldren of Coldren Monroe Antiques in West Chester. Tim specializes in helping historic home owners with metalwork needed for these homes such as locks and door hardware. As he told me, an old lock cannot be picked like todays modern locks. Maybe a significant benefit to owning an Tredyffrin Easttown historic home. Anyway, here is a short clip on the history of old locks.

Tim is a great person to know if you own an historic home anywhere in the States as he ships all over the country, he also has access to fireplace mantels, and all sorts of other things you might need as well.

Hi Nick and Trudy.  I would guess that your knowledge of antiques helps you with marketing and selling historic homes.

I really like historic homes, as long as they have been well taken care of, rather than being let go.

Brian England, I think a lot of historic home owners don't know who to go to and end up using a local contractor who makes changes which alter the integrity of the home as an historic home. That is why I like posting this information so those owners who want to do the right thing can and know who to turn to.

Hi Trudy and Nick -- another information-packed post and I like how you describe a historic home owner as a custodian.   Regular care, maintenance and upkeep make them a better place to live.

Michael Jacobs thank you, I believe we are custodians of not just historic homes but also the antiques and art we may own as well. Just like a car, homes need maintenance whether they are historic or not. Many homeowners don't think about that.
