Who likes to play in the mud?

We Californians truly enjoy our outdoor lifestyle. Staying indoors is contrary to many of our wishes. When rains come hard, accompanied with high winds, it's only prudent to hunker down and stay off the roads, out of harm's way. But when the rain stops.....ah, that's when we remember once again what a glorious place we have to call home.

Delightfully muddy trails in The PresidioToday dawned clear, the first in many days, so my husband (who works at home on Wednesdays) and I took advantage of the opportunity for a long lunch. We borrowed Tanner who loves these adventures as much as we do, and off we went to explore and enjoy some of my favorite trails in The Presidio in San Francisco.

Our trek today started at Inspiration Point, a scant 10-minute drive from our home. From there we walked across the upper reaches of the parkland, where the trails are a bit wilder and more remote than at the main post or at Crissy Field at the edge of the bay. Our destination was Immigrant Point, a beautiful overlook where one can gaze out across the Pacific Ocean to the Marin hills.

The trails, as expected, were muddy, and the air crisp and cool. In the more sheltered spots, the sun was gently warm.

What I didn't expect was seeing just how many trees had come down in the last week or two of storms.

Around almost every bend we'd see branches down, stumps of trees. The work crews had done a great job of opening up trails, but several were still closed due to trees that had fallen across them and hadn't been cleared yet.

Trail closed, The Presidio 2.22.17

We came home a couple of hours later, refreshed and happy. One of us was definitely more muddy than the other two since that one loves puddles of all shapes and sizes, from ones that just wet his feet, to those where he actually swims!

The long lunch break was great; I had worked all morning at the computer and was now refreshed both physically and mentally, ready for an afternoon of learning at a symposium sponsored by the Women's Council of Realtors and an evening at the computer.

Life in San Francisco - always a treat, always an adventure.

Good Morning Lottie - I can certainly see the mud in that picture of Tanner.  Beautiful green foliage.

Praful Thakkar - after 5 years of drought, we needed the rain. But---enough is enough--it's no longer beneficial.

Endre Barath, Jr. - Schmo is adorable - I imagine you have a lot of fun with him.

Hi Kat Palmiotti - we don't give enough credit to the crews who keep our roads and trails safe and usable after big storms. They do a great job under difficult circumstances.

Good morning, Dorie Dillard - it's important to me to get plenty of exercise and fresh air -- helps the brain function better! It was a treat that Gene could break free on Wednesday so we could enjoy it together.

You have to like mud to like a day like yesterday Grant Schneider - Tanner certainly loved it!

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat - "water logged and mud endowed" certainly describes our state. How are things in your Sacramento area?

Nina Hollander - we have fared well in San Francisco during these weeks of torrential rain. Other parts, not so well. Several stretches of Highway One, the coast highway, are closed due to road slippage and mud slides. Yesterday I read that one of the bridges along the Big Sur coast, south of Carmel, has been damaged beyond repair. San Jose has had massive flooding in some areas, over 14,000 households evacuated.

Fortunately, today is another bright and sunny day, with not a cloud in sight.

Nice story, enjoying nature.

We once had redwood trees in Colorado. Near Cripple Creek, lava and ash from ancient volcanoes covered the land, including the floor of a redwood forest. The trees are long gone, but the bases of the trees became petrified stumps from the ash and may be seen at the Florrisant Fossil Beds National Monument.

Hi Joe Pryor - I can see from the picture that your little dog is far too neat to enjoy muddy trails   Our golden retriever is another story!

Good morning Ron and Alexandra Seigel -- I've never met a cat would enjoyed playing in the rain and mud, although when my daughter was little she swore her cat voluntarily jumped into the bath tub with her (I had my suspicions.)

Hello Jerry Lucas - I haven't been up long, and already I have learned something new for the day - petrified redwood trees in Colorado.

Enjoying nature and getting outdoors is part of our northern California lifestyle!

Hi Lottie

You have certainly had far more rain than we have. Tanner certainly seemed to be having a wonderful time! Yep, the outdoor lifestyle is one we Californians definitely enjoy whenever possible.

Kids and pets love playing in puddles and in the mud, too. I don't like it at all and don't want my shoes dirty. It must be my OCD nature.

Lucky loves to get dirty. The back of my Subaru now needs a good spring cleaning after all the moisture we got courtesy of you. It's proof of how dirty one dog can get. I thank you for that and so does Lucky.

Yes, Jeff Dowler and Lou Ludwig - Golden Retrievers LOVE water of any kind, including mud. Rachael and I will take him back to the Presidio today, but it will be far less muddy now.

Hi Debbie Laity - yeah, that's how our Subaru looks, too, but it's worth it!

Since I've been hiking for years and years, I'm quite used to mud, Debbie Reynolds However, I can say I don't revel in it like Tanner does.
