John Henry George was born in Abbotskerswell, Devon back in 1864. Again, I’m sorry but I do not have any information as to who his parents were upbringing or where (if he did) attended school. what I can tell you of course is the rest of the story so let’s get to it shall we.
John served in the Royal Navy and was a known thief. In 1884 he was convicted of murder of his employer. The evidence against him was weak at best, and circumstantial. Much of it was based on a cut to his arm. He was convicted and sentenced to hang. In 1885 he was sent to the gallows a rope placed around his neck and the trapdoor was sprung. However, it held in place and no one could figure it out. They tried again twice for a total of 3 attempts, each one ended in failure for the trapdoor held in place. His sentence was reversed to life in prison. However, he was released in 1907.
I’m writing about John Henry George Lee AKA John “Babbacombe” Lee. After his release, he toured the country lecturing on his life. He died in the United States in 1945 using the name of James Lee. A book was written about him “The Man They Could Not Hang”. Some attribute it to divine intervention. So, what say you? Divine intervention or just luck?
