Saturday Smiles: Exotic Delights Of The Santa Barbara Farmers Market

Thanks to all the rains we have been blessed with, Chanterelle mushrooms have been growing amid the oak trees that dot the ranches and farmlands of Santa Barbara County.  They are one of our favorite wild mushrooms.  They are on the dinner menu this evening.

Walla-walla onions are also a favorite of ours.  They are delicious in their raw state as well as cooked.

And the most exotic offering was puntarella. Puntarella (means little shoot in Italian) is a member of the chicory family like endive, and radicchio are.  It has a bitter taste which is tamed by plunging the leaves and shoots in cold water until they curl.  In Italy, they are tossed with a dressing made with anchovies, garlic, red wine vinegar and olive oil.  Two of our favorite farmers had large selections of puntarella.

Wishing you an abundance of Saturday Smiles!

I am not familiar with Pontarella Ron and Alexandra Seigel but I could easily make a meal of the mushrooms and onions with nothing else.

Alexandra, I really like all kinds of mushrooms and these  look delicious to me.

I think your Lakers are on the right path with hiring the Magic Man.. Plus they rid of some dead wood in my opinion. It will take a few years but they will be back.

I see a lot of mushrooms along the fairways of the golf courses, but do not know enough about them to even think they could be edible

Endre Barath, Jr. no, we bought them at the Farmers Market.  We had them growing in Napa, lots of oaks on our then property.  No oaks nearby.  A

from the point of representing developers and land sellers that is 'good' that there are no oak trees around:)) and I remember going with my parents picking wild mushrooms... great childhood memories....Endre

Ed Silva the only ones I know are these chanterelles and porcini mushrooms which grow in Italy.  One of the markets we loved in Sonoma, when we lived in Napa brought them in from Canada...My grandparents really knew their mushrooms.  A

Good morning A.  Everything you mentioned sounded great until you got to anchovies.  I've tried them however, they are not on my mind for the next 2-3  decades... LOL

It looks like salad time at the Seigel house. Those little onions look sweet and tasty. The puntarella is a new vegetable to me.
