Long Distance Referral Tips

Here we are on Active Rain connecting with people all across the country.  Have you ever thought about how many poeple in different parts of the country would refer business to you if they "knew" you?  This is the wonderful essence of networking online.

For the last 9 years I have developed a network of business associates in various networks including my own network that I've been able to refer business just because I know them.  I've actually referred people out of state to people who needed services right here in the area I live when I could have referred a local person.  That tells you it's all about relationship.

Some of my best contacts are all over the country and I've never met them.  The cool thing though is when I travel, I get to meet people I've been networking with online with in person.  It's like we've known each other for years.  In fact we have as a result of our connecting online.

On the other side of things I get referrals from people all over the country also.  It's a great compliment to have a Realtor or Insurance Agent give my name to a person who's in need of a Will, or needs some documents reviewed or looking for an identity theft plan.

Long distrance referrals really do happen.  When we think about it, it's just as easy and probably easier to refer someone you've met online because you get a chance to investigate their claims via their blogs and websites,  not to mention Google.

Because we are in a market that is cyclical, we have to expand our networks to include people who think like us and are looking for ways to beat the cycle.

Most of my referrals are among busness owners. We happen to be consumers also and we need products and services.  The thing is we like to buy but we don't like being sold.

Here's my strategy:

1. Look for business owners looking for specific answers

2. Listen to what business owners are really saying

3. Learn how business owners help purchasers with their product/service

4. Make the referral

I really believe that in order to do better I have to find ways to help others do better.  That's why I refer people to others.  As an example, just the other day I was reading a blog and a person indicated they needed a particular type of insurance. Immediately I thought of a business associate I met here on Active Rain and helped them make a connection.  The good thing about this connection is both of these people now know me as a person who's looking to help.  Do you think I've moved up a bit on their radar?

Even if it's long distance, the rules of referral marketing haven't changed.

It's always been about not WHO you are but who you KNOW.  I live the largest community of a group of about 10 or 12 relatively small communities in a 75-100 mile radius.  Knowing a wide variety of people throughout the area has served me well, but more importantly it serves my clients very well.

New people moving into the area need lots of professional referrals.  Every time I refer a client to the insurance agent, hair dresser, or even the local pub, it's put me up front in the minds of those business people as a Realtor who really works.  It does result in more real estate business.

We people relocating across the country, the referral network bigger, but works the same.

Cedric,

Agreed. Let the client wander into the garden. Then, build up a protective fence around them and be their go-to source for their needs. You've got the best sources for them, so they always come to you for their needs. It just makes sense. It's a win-win for everyone.

Best wishes.
