Everybody complains about the spring time change, and for most, it means an hour less of sleep. The Greenberg household, however, runs on DogTime®. We get up when the dogs get up - as soon as it starts to get a wee bit brighter - not because we really want to, but it's hard to sleep with four sets of eyes glaring at you (while he isn't officially listed on the playbill, the cat is very much involved too). Our guys are Olympic-class naggers, and pretty much impossible to ignore.
So this morning was actually a big improvement. With the time change, our dogs got us up at 6:15 instead of 5:15, so we're not as pissed off at them as we usually are - we actually got an extra hour's sleep, if you use the sick and twisted logic of time changes. Of course, it will all even out in the fall, when we'll be twice as mad that they got us up an hour earlier than usual.
By the way, this is all Mary's fault, and I can prove it. Once the dogs go outside and decorate the yard, Mary feeds them breakfast. She's a softie and they look so hungry! So this whole get up early thing is really all about breakfast, one of the 43 most exciting events of the day if you're a dog (or a union rules-violating cat who technically isn't supposed to get excited about anything).
But canine expectations are different when Mary is in Chicago visiting the kids and grandkids and I'm holding down the fort. The dogs and cat know not to mess with me - they get up when I get up and they get breakfast right before I go to work. They're just fine with that, too. But Mary doesn't have the heart to disappoint them, and how could I insist that she be mean to the poor little guys.
Sleep is highly over-rated anyhow.
