My middle son, Jeremy, decided to become a Marine. He left for boot camp on Mothers Day.
He has written a book about his experiences called Kicking Ace Taking Names you can order the book by following the link and all profits go to support veterans.
One of the lessons I learnt from him was something he said about Boot Camp. As good parents we had tried to prepare him, on reading the book wrongly it seemed, by preparing him in case he did not make it through.
Much later he said talking about the Drill Instructors and Boot Camp in general, "Dad, they weren't going to kill you whatever they said, they were there to prepare us, to get us ready for something which was unnatural. It was all mental. Knowing that, it was not hard."
Following Boot Camp he had Infantry School and from there went on to train for Recon, the marines version of Special Forces, the SEALS, Rangers etc. Again, he made it through although he was never the biggest guy,and saw many bigger guys drop out, because he knew it was all mental. You had to have your head right and then everything else worked.
