Ask An Ambassador: 10 Things You Learn In The Rain

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Elite 513.520.5305 SAL.2002007747

We've been doing our best to put the "Active" in ActiveRain for almost 7 years, and there are many key lessons to learn.  The quicker you learn and apply, the better your Rain experience:

1.  Playing nice in the sandbox mattered in kindergarten and it matters here too.  This community isn't a place for bare knuckle brawls.  If you're looking to fight, I've got a few places to suggest for you to look, but the Rain isn't one of them.

2.  Posts and comments are permanent.  Thank you Interwebs and it's a double edged sword.  If we do things right, we get found, we get business.  We do things wrong, we get found, we LOSE business.

3.  Everything you need to know to grow your business is right here.  It might take some digging, but there are templates for blogging, experts sharing SEO tips, free picture sources, advice on how to blog for business, relationship building and more.

4.  You don't have to meet them to be friends.  I've made a LOT of friends in the Rain over the years.  Some are still active in the Rain, some aren't, but we still keep in touch.  I've been fortunate to meet many Rainers and it's never been like meeting a stranger.

5.  Real estate is local.  We're all trying to do the same thing (help people transfer ownership), but HOW we do it might be vastly different.  Knowing the differences just might give us an idea on how to do things better for our own market.

6.  Blogging gets easier.  The more you practice, the more ideas come to you and the faster you can construct your posts.  And you learn what is a good topic to pursue, and what isn't going to help your business.

7.  Niche blogging can be VERY powerful.  Find the right niche and saturate it and watch your business grow.

8.  Write evergeen posts with solid content whenever possible.  Assume THAT post is your first impression on a consumer or potential referral agent.

9.  Be yourself.  Unless you're a jerk.  People here want to interact with people they feel like they've gotten to know, so it's okay to post about things other than real estate.  Your pets, your kids, your local area, your history.  All fair game and part of building relationships.

10.  Rainers WANT to help you.  Got a problem?  Just ask.  Chances are someone might have the answer.  Use the Q&A section, ask an ambassador, ask a Rainer, call/text/email, but ask.  I've NEVER had anyone here refuse to help when asked.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help!

Mary Jo, No doubt some can be pretty entrenched with their opinions...just bring up part time agents, open houses or dual agency to get them out in public :)

Praful, The Pay It Forward community spirit is one of the main attractions for us.

Kat, For the most part, the true jerks find themselves leaving the community.  This place just doesn't give them the support and attention they desire.

IREM, About 1/2 our business last year was directly attributable to niche blogging and/or our Wordpress IDX pages.  Sometimes hard to distinguish the two from each other.  As far as evergreen, niche blogging, etc., it's something that has been touched on periodically.  Try going through Bob Stewart's posts for them (it's happened over the years, so might take a bit).  And same in the Ask An Ambassador group.  I know Debbie Reynolds did a post on "evergreen" last year.

John, People may forgive, but I don't think they forget easily.  Those flame wars from years back could still be costing someone's reputation today.

Foster, Thanks!

... a small office, delivering big service!

A lot of truth in that list.  I have found that, in my experience, jerks don't last in the Rain because most Rainers are quick learners!

Sharon, Rare is the day that I don't pick up some tip that I can use.

Mick, Playing in the Rain is part of our day, every day for years.

Bunny, A great community to gain from!  And love the Sante Fe area, although it's been quite a few years since my last visit.

Gary, A true jerk just can't hide it, can they?  And once we know, we can choose to steer clear.

Brien, There's much to gain here and I don't expect that to change.

Jackie Adams , an evergreen post is one that maintains its value year after year.  For example if I write about a local event, chances are that post loses effectiveness once the event has come and gone.  On the other hand, if I write a post about a particular subdivision and include IDX info that automatically updates to show the homes currently for sale, that post is evergreen.  It doesn't lose value and works for me year after year.    Debbie Reynolds wrote a post on Evergreen that provides more detail.   There's also a 30 minute video from ActiveRain that talks to it a bit.

Hi Bliz, thanks for the great reminder-post. To be sure, some days the fingers whine a bit  but perseverance is required to build up many layers of solid real estate related content.  We too love great Evergreen Posts - they cane be an essentially zero-cost gift that keeps giving!  John and Kat

Richie, Appreciate the help today.  You made my co-worker happy to have that info for when she gets back to Cali.

Melissa, Lots of people here willing to share.

John & Kat, We know that just reliably plugging away increases the odds of getting found, so we keep after it.

Melissa, There's something to learn in this community every day, and there's no predicting what it will be.
