Wordless Wednesday- Looking for Babies
Spring is on its way (although those of you in the northeast may want to take exception to that) and that means it’s nesting time!
We’ve been keeping an eye on Green Cay Wetlands to see if there were any nests yet. We haven’t run across any..yet...but wanted to share this nest we found a few years ago.
It is the nest of a Red-winged Blackbird. It’s just like Mother Nature to give all of the color and pizzazz to the males of the species.
The male Red-winged blackbird is just that...black with a red splash of color on the wing.
The female, however, is blah-brown...in fact I had no idea they were related when I first saw them.
The male will perch on a pole or tree and oversee their residence...making sure that nothing or no one comes too close. They will attack if a larger bird or human gets too close. I can attest to that because while photographing the nest, which was several feet away, the male swooped down and let my head know he was there!
If you’re out, take some time to see what Mother Nature is doing. She might surprise you.
