Branding Moments: You Be The Judge!

When we saw this sign on the entrance of a yoga studio in Scottsdale, Arizona, we debated whether to take a picture and share it as a branding moment.  This is an example of taboo marketing, or how to get attention using a strategy that catches attention by virtue of the reference to a topic that is potentially X-Rated.

This brand made us wonder, "who is the target market?" and "how long will they stay in business?" You be the judge.  What do you think?

Ron and Alexandra, to me, it's no different than some of the real estate videos I've seen. Will there be audience for this brand? I'm sure there will be. Perhaps, they're targeting a specific audience, if that's the goal, they shall get what they're after. Makes you wonder, how important is the brand? Does it make a difference? After reading all the comments, people will choose the business based on their branding. Very interesting.

Good morning, Alexandra and Ron -- well, it's worthy of a photo and will certainly stir up some conversation.   As far as business branding, I'm not so sure.

Did they try to catch the coattails of the 50 Shades following?  Because otherwise the name and yoga really don't have any tie to each other so beyond the initial novelty of the name, I don't see it helping them long term.  Bill

Good Morning Ron and Alexandra - you comments are right on point.  Who is the market?  They are sending a confusing message.

Haha, from the name, it would lead me to believe that more than yoga goes on in there.

I'm not sure what the hidden message might be, but it doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Ugh.  I do not think this is a good marketing strategy at all.

Beth Atalay Branding is an intensive examination of the company/person's intentions, core values and how they want to be perceived in their marketplace. All of us can sense who is who and what is what, and whether or not they are on our wavelength or not. The best way to explain this is we are not a fit.  A

I am not a prude...but just kind of stupid if you ask me. I think it is a one trick pony.

To me it seems counter to the product.  Perhaps it belongs on an adult book store instead!

I just read comment #11 left by Joe Pryor. Absolutely hilarious!

I suspect there could be a sign on the interior which read, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but whips and chains delight me!"

Hi Ron & Alexandra - I could be convinced of a link between yoga and S&M, but I'd never try to take it to the market if it were my deal. Fail.

Alexandra, This is done in bad taste in my opinion and will not be a long run branding idea to say the least.

I'll admit, it took me a minute. Not a brand I would be displaying.  Their target? I'm sure they hope this signage will bring the ones that get it - or want to get it.
