Creating a Green Mailbox
What's even better than recycling? Reducing your paper waste and protecting your privacy by eliminating unwanted junk mail! Estimates indicate that 28 billion gallons of water and 100 million trees are needed each year to create 4.5 million tons of annual US junk mail. Here are some options to reduce paper in your home:
· Use a service to reduce unwanted mail. Catalog Choice is an easy, free service that allows you to decline unsolicited catalogs and select the catalogs you want. Sign up for free at.

· Call or email catalog customer service departments to request that your name and address be removed from their mailing list. Contacting vendors by email is a great assignment for a budding internet user or someone in your house who wants to earn extra allowance. The results are quick and satisfying: you'll have less mail in your box in one to two months.
· Remove your name and address from national mailing lists by contacting the Direct Marketing Association. Your name will be placed on a "mail preference list" that is similar to the "do not call" telemarketing list. For quickest results, sign up online at www.dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailinglist. A $1 fee is charged to your credit card. You may also include a $1 check with your written request to the DMA at:
