I am dedicating this Mother's Day post to My wonderful MOM first (of course) and also a tribute, with many fond memories to my Aunt Sally, who passed away on April 29, 2008 at the age of 93. Basically, this is a heartfelt wish to all mom's on ActiveRain and out, friends, family and acquaintances who are moms, stepmoms, single dads who are moms that you enjoy the time you have together and show the mom's that they are appreciated.

I had written about my Aunt Sally briefly in Japanese in Hawaii: My Ancestry along with my mom and basically my heritage. My cousin and I were going back and forth by email two nights ago remembering the time we went to Kauai together to stay with Aunt Sally for the summer. That summer was the summer of 1969. Wow. 1969. No computers, cell phones or even a bunch of television. We MADE our fun.

  • Like, 'borrowing' the row boat next door and my cousin pushing it out with me in it and falling in Aunt Sallythe river because she missed the boat. (she claims it was the other way around)
  • Like, my cousin trying to crawl in the menehune cave (read more here: Hawaiian Legends - Nightmarchers, Menehune, and the Tiki Gods) and I ran away because I was afraid bad luck would befall me.....and left her there.
  • Like, bringing home a pregnant cat from the beach and hiding it under the big wash bin. And then while eating lunch my Aunt Sally looks outside to see the wash bin 'floating' across the yard.
  • Like, hating vegetables and acting like I wiped my mouth only to spit them in the napkin. And then accidentally dropping them all over the floor on my way to put the napkin in the trash. LOL!

My Aunt Sally was a very talented woman. She taught me to play the ukulele, to sew, to crochet and to clean a house. And if I did not do any of these thoroughly and correct, I would have to do it all over again. My Aunt Sally also taught my mom the same. To this day I am a very detail oriented person. I like it that way. :)

My Aunt Sally had a long life but for maybe the past 15 years she had Alzheimer's. From many years ago she has not recognized anyone but I wanted to show appreciation to her for this Mother's Day too because she was my 'mom' on Kauai for many springs and summer visits in my younger years.

So, my Mom, my Aunt Nancy, my cousins, Gary and I will be flying to Kauai tomorrow morning and attend the services for my Aunt Sally in the afternoon.

Mother's Day is a day to remember our mother's and all mother's in the world. To give credit for the strength and love a mother holds for their children, their family, their extended family, and that common bond all mother's carry. A day to show our appreciation.

Happy Mother's Day Mom. Happy Mother's Day Aunty Sally and Happy Mother's Day to All!

Sally, What a wonderful tribute to your lovely Aunt Sally.  You brought a tear to my eyes.  I've always hoped that I have left that kind of impact on someone.  You are so lucky to have the wonderful memories you have with her.  Cherish them, and share them with your family always.  Have a Great Mother's Day yourself!

Sally:

This is such a beautiful post ... wonderfully written ... sweet memories of your family.  Have a wonderful day with your Mom tomorrow.  Even though it probably won't be an easy thing to do, it's so nice that you have this service planned as a tribute to your Aunt Sally!

Thanks Jan....the service was planned by her children (my cousins) but this is surely a tribute for good memories for sure.

Hi Sally,  I do agree with Bob, a great tribute to your Aunt Sally.  It is a blessing to have people in our lives who mean so much.  I just sent out Mother's Day Cards to several women who were a special part of my childhood.  As I matured I learned to appreciate the lessons I learned from each of them.  I am truly appreciative.   Happy Mother's Day to you.

George: Oh, really great ones they are. I haven't really gone through any feelings the past week as it's been so many years not communicating with her but for some reason...writing it out and responding now has me thinking more. It's a half hour from here to there. Go up and come down and ...I will  ...thanks George.

Sally- Mothers do have a common bond....whether they are Birth Mothers, Adoptive Mothers, or just the person taking on the role.......and that common bond is love.  Hope you have a Happy Mothers Day when you get back......remember it's only a 1/2 hour ride....2 times up, and 2 down....a piece of cake :)

Dear Sally, My sincere sympathies in the passing of your aunt and your friend.

Please allow me this small tribute in hope that it might help you ease the loss and also to revere the memories that shall be a part of your life.

I will do just a few lines taken from a song that was written by Josh Groban for his Grandmother 's passing.

" I feel you all around me, you're memory is so clear, deep within the stillness, I can hear you speak, you're still an inspiration, can it be.

" Are you gently sleeping, here inside my dreams and isn't faith believing all powers can't be seen, as my heart holds you just one beat away, I cherish all you gave me, everyday.

" And I believe that angels breath and that love will live on and never leave. Fly me to where you are, beyond the distant star, I wish tonight to see you smile, if only for a while, to know you are still there, a breath aways not far to where you are.

To you, Gary, Mom and all the family, may you each be blessed with the treasure of her love and be content to know that her job is now done and you all came out just fine. She is happy and at peace.

With My Sincere Sympathy,
William

Sally, what great memories of your Aunt Sally. Longevity rules in your family. I love those antics we pulled as children - thinking that no one would know. My sister used to hide her peas under the chair cushion at the dinner table. So funny......OR was it me? ;-)

Lil Bro: Funny, I 'felt' that yesterday during the service. It was a Buddhist service from her church and very different to say the least. One thing is for certain...and what I believe.....we live and we die...it's what we do in between that matters. They rearranged the words and went in depth but it was basically the same meaning. Acceptance of death allows us to live our life. When it's others though...it isn't so easy for the grief. I watched my cousins (my aunt sally's kids) go through some feelings. I listened to her grandchildren ...such thoughtful ...but real comments....okay...now I'm going on and on.

Bottom line? Aunt Sally was smiling down on everyone.

What a super tribute to your Aunt.  You helped us realize that you must let your family & friends know how much you love them because nobody knows how long we have.  It is so easy to take for granted all the things that make life so grand.  It is to bad that the only time you realize these things is when they are gone.

I hope you had a great Mothers Day!
