Galloway College building before Galloway became Harding University

galloway college

I have a permanent search on ebay for certain collectibles or memorabilia and one of the searches I have is for Searcy AR, my home town.  The fun thing is ebay will email you any new items for that search.  No looking every night or wondering if you've missed something.  This card is one that I found.  It shows Galloway College, Searcy ARK.

This building must have been new because there are almost no trees in the front yard.  It was a huge building.  I love the dog and the gentlement in the front yard.  Galloway College was a women's college.  This, I believe, was the dorm.  It later burned.

There's a name, J. A. Kimbrough on the front of the card.  Perhaps he was the photographer.  On the back is is postmarked August 19 1908 and was addredded to Miss Emma Painter, Philadelphia Penn.  It was mailed from Kensett ARK.

Hi Jennifer.  Glad you made it home.  I loved selling the house and I see one is starting on Orleans!  ebay is fun.  You must learn something about it.

Barb,

My Mom would have us get a switch of the tree also.  At Christmas we ask what we were getting and she said a sack of swithches and a bag of coal.  So we wrapped some swithes up and put them under the tee for her.  BIG MISTAKE!  She  used all of them on us, as she needed them.

Debbie, it was, I guess fashionable to let the kid get the switch.  Must be equivalent to making the kid do "time out" now.  I think the switching was more effective!!

I love those old photos from 100 years ago, I have seen plenty of the town I live in. I especially love the ones where the buildings are still standing today, over time some of them haven't changed much at all.

Barbara, I think you can buy and find anything on eBay. I, too like these old photos.

Alan, the buildings are wonderful.  Most have so many grown trees that the photos are not good though.

Gary, thanks for viewing my old photos.  I have two more to put up showing the old streets.  I'll do one a day.

Barbara, thanks very much for sharing this image. I find old photos enjoyable, and I've rarely seen one that features architecture (most are portraiture).

It's interesting to note the almost total lack of convergance in the image (just a bit on the right side of the image).

Those old cameras tended to use bellow style lens attachments, sort of the precursor to a tilt shift commonly used by arch. photographers. This allows the camera to stay parallel to the film plane. You can also see there's some loss of sharpness along both edges...

the cameras back then hard large film planes and as a result DOF was often a problem even when shot at very small apertures.

I'm willing to bet it was very bright out when they took that shot, in order to expose it quickly enough to freeze the dog.

Cool! :)

Bryce,  WOW!  You know photography, sounds like!  I just like old pictures of old buildings.  I plan to put up some more in the next few days so keep my blog available.  Thanks for sharing your knowledge about how it was done.
