The last three houses that I have owned had double garages. In reality, only one of the three would hold two cars.
The picture below is of my previous house. This garage has about one and a half feet of extra space on each side of the door.
The picture below is of our current house. It has extra space on either side of the garage door which makes it large enough to hold both of our vehicles, my Lexus RX 350 SUV and Walt's Toyota Tacoma extended cab truck.

Sybil, Pretty common here too where those 2 cars had better be SMALL cars if you want to put two in the garage. For us, it's a moot point as four of our cats own our garage :)

True! Our cars haven't been inside the garage for at least a decade. Our last update we replaced the garage doors and rather than solid the new ones each have a row of windows. Put cat trees up and the cats climb to the top and stare outside.
Sybil, true indeed. The two car garages I see do hold 2 cars, but then what happens to the driver who can't get out? lol Builders wanting to maximize their profit have inevitably turned most 2 car garages into much less.

Many of the garages in our area are too small to park two cars and when you add steps out of the house it really gets cramped.

I showed a client a house this past weekend and there was a double grage door to it, but the support columns for the structure were in the center of the second bay so no more than 1 car would fit.
I don't know what some contractors are thinking when they do things like that Ed.
It's not the number of doors when it comes to garages these days, Sybil... it's the space in the garage and the height of the garage to accommodate ever larger cars. Some garages are technically 3-car, but only if you put in three compact cars.
You are right Nina. I got spoiled having larger garages in most of the homes I owned prior to the last few.
