a Mid-Modern Century Feel
For the past few years, it seems our country has been obsessed with what is called "Mid-Modern" or "Mid-century modern" design. For the sake of simplicity, let's call it Mid-Modern for this post---a style that seemingly sweeps all generations, from Millenials to the baby-boomers that grew up with the REAL mid-modern design.
Mid-modern design can be difficult to describe. It broadly describes architecture and design from the mid-20th century. Some have argued that the period is more defined as post World War II and that it ends at the end of the 1950s, but it has been stretched to define times from both before and after (metro New York had a mid-modern influence by the 1930s; in the Midwest the period stretched into the early 1970s).
If you're searching for authentic mid-modern design in Door County, you'll find it's actually hard to find north of Sturgeon Bay. I've been lucky enough to have some authentic and creative mid-modern homes in my inventory over the past decade, and these homes don't last. Some of my favorites have been classics: a waterfront home on Door Bluff Park Road in Ellison Bay that was designed by architects whose work has been named as historic in the Milwaukee area (and elsewhere). Last year, we sold our 1920s farmhouse in Ephraim that had been remodeled in 1953 and 1954 into a lovely mid-modern gem, and that home was actually featured in Better Homes & Gardens in November, 1954. You can't get more "Mid-Century Modern" than that!
As such, we feel lucky to currently have a 1956 Cape Cod home for sale in Sister Bay (it won't last!) as a listing, as well as our new Sister Bay listing being discussed today, which actually was built in the 1970s but enjoys a lovely mid-modern feel along with the best of new upgrades (granite counter tops, stainless appliances and all modern conveniences).
Our water view home for sale at 10935 Birchwood Drive in Sister Bay, Wisconsin has many original elements that quickly bring to mind the mid-modern movement.
SISTER BAY WATER VIEW HOME HAS MID-MODERN FEEL
These elements include the crisp, clean lines and design elements (breezeway, field stone) that were so popular in the 1950s and 1960s (the home was actually built in 1961 (Door County Assessor's Office Records), and incorporates real Door County field stone elements that would be difficult to recreate because of cost today. However, do not let the size of the home in the photo deter you, because this is actually a four bedroom home that stretches out over two full stories. It manages to capture the best of the old and the new.
COPPER FIREPLACE HOOD INVOKES MID-MODERN FEEL
IN MASTER BEDROOM SUITE
The modern kitchen in the home on Birchwood Drive specifically invokes a mid-modern feel, with its stone elements of wall that blend into the stone "back-splash" behind the cook top and 1960s-style lighting; however, it's been upgraded to blend stainless steel appliances seamlessly in with the older design elements.
This home combines the best of old and new, in a private setting with incredible views of the Bay of Green Bay--a true taste of coastal living combined with a mid-modern feel from this 1960s home. With four bedrooms, its easy to entertain overnight visitors. It's also within walking distance of downtown Sister Bay, which is Door County's most popular destination.
