It seems a week doesn't go by that a Dakno blogging boot camp student doesn't ask that million dollar
question, "What should I blog about?" I like the fact that they are asking the question. New bloggers are so energized and enthusiastic. They still have that sparkle in their eyes. And when they get their new blog, you would think it's Christmas morning all over again. I've heard Christmas arrives each day for 80,000 new blog sites. That's a lot of new blogs hitting the blogosphere. On the flip side, I wonder how many blogs were abandoned today?
The Reasons for Shipwrecked Blogs
Too often I see relics of old blogs left high and dry, abandoned by their owners. What a shame. These valuable online tools going to waste. No doubt, the owners:
- Became "to busy" to write post
- Maybe lost interest never recognizing the real value in blogging
- Maybe even suffered blogger's burnout
- Perhaps encountered a terminal case of writers block
Other Reasons for Shipwrecks
Then again, maybe the blog owners had legitimate reasons for putting their blog aside. Could it be they chose another blogging platform and left the old blog for a new one? If you must do this, why not place a static "page" as your landing page on the old blog so it's not so immediately evident the blog has been abandoned.
Either way, as a real estate web marketing consultant and blogging enthusiast, it saddens me to see these portals left behind. Honestly, I can't understand why the blog owner doesn't just put the poor thing out of its misery. Why even pay the hosting fees to keep the poor thing alive? Especially if it doesn't bring you business or help you with your SEO strategy.
Can a Consumer Tell if a Blog Has Been Abandoned?
I think so. With most blogs there are tell-tale signs that a blog has been ignored. It's real easy to see when the last dated post was added. Besides, many blog post contain a "calendar" in the side bar which is a clear indication when the last blog post might have been written.
What Kind of Message Does an Abandon Blog Send
Does it matter that a blog has been abandoned? Again, I have to indicate in the affirmative. So I began to ponder what difference it might make to a consumer.
-
Do you think it could communicate to the consumer that the blogger was "less than professional" not maintaining their site?
-
Is it possible consumers might conclude that the owner of the "failed blog" might be a good starter of initiatives but be viewed as a "poor" finisher?
- Could an agent simply say, "I became too busy to maintain my blog" and a consumer accept that answer without making any negative judgments?
Maybe. Right or wrong, reality or perception, what message do you think an abandoned blog sends to consumers? Do you think it makes a difference? Leave a comment and tell me what you think.

75 Comments on Abandoned Real Estate Blogs - Is It a Growing Trend in Our Industry?
Bobby - I think I have a few out there somewhere that My webguy/husband tried to get me interested in before he found active|rain perhaps its time to as you say find them and put them to rest or put up a static page
Great blog and very true. I'm still new, but trying to be a regular.
Dave
great post. i haven't yet formed a blog, except on AR. I'm still tinkering and figuring things out. still researching the best way to build a website too. know they have to be connected somehow and drive traffic. a lot to consider.
LOL....blogging SOS going out. I know that there are a few blogs I have found by agents in this area that have one post or two or haven't had a post in 6 months or more.
I think there's a possibility that if a consumer came across an abandoned blog, they might think the agent is out of business. UGH!
I have a lot of fun with my WP blog and it's working quite well, so I try to post daily or at minimum every other day. I'm of the idea that not every post has to be a novel ... some are just for fun to mix it up with the hard real estate stuff.
Abandoned blogs may speak to a lack of committment or refusal to recognize change in our industry. Whatever the reason, it's tragic to see people walk away from a blog.
AR needs a system to remove bloggers that are inactive for a certain period of time, like 6 months or more. I am looking people up on here and get to the bottom of the page and know these people have moved on.
Bobby - I would imagine that blogging isn't all that different from all of the New Year's resolutions that people make in their personal and professional lives. It requires consistency, self discipline and forming productive habits. The pay off isn't immediate, but is gained over time.
Consistency is key! If I ever decided to stop blogging I would probably remove my blog, not simply abandon it. Or at least write a last message explaining that I was moving on to something different. Great topic & discussion.
I think it's interesting that some of the folks I follow have changed their blogs to be "dateless" so that folks can't really tell! Great info!
Great info, I think for me, a lot of things that seemed so important to blog about when I started blogging, isn't as important now. I guess that it shouldn't matter. Great blog!
What can I say after 67 already commented on the subject. Other that I agree with most of it. But the main reason for me stopping here was the topic and the catchy title. I guess that defines it all
It said that doing some for 21 days makes it a habit. You have to it to have it, so it takes an investment and that investment is time to grow and maintain your business .
This is a great post. I hope that it helps prevent others from giving up. Blogging represents real value as a business marketing strategy.
Thanks to all for the thoughtful comments! I wish I had time to respond to each however I'm very busy blogging!!! :>)
I can defintiely see where people would burnout or lose interest, but then again it is like everything else - the 80/20 rule.
Time. Time. TIME. For some it can be all about time, or lack of time. I do not see one single top agent in my area blogging. They seem too busy. Sometime it makes me wonder if I am not spending too much of my time on it.
I love Emerald Isle and the Crystal Coast, and can hardly wait to get back for a summer vacation once again. It is certainly one of my favorite places.
This is a great blogging pep-talk! It is so true, you have to keep the blog fresh. I think sometimes people just start to think nothing will come of blogging and commenting, so they quit. But there is much to be said about continuing on... gotta get your listings out on the web!
Great article and very true. Great pep talk to keep us blogging
