Progress, Not Perfection

In the film The Equalizer, Denzel Washington’s character says to delray beachsomeone Progress, not perfection.

He is lending support and encouragement to a co-worker who is trying to lose weight for a job he wants.

This is so simple and yet, how many of us focus so much on getting it perfect, doing something absolutely right, that we never even take that first step?

We have a friend who has been trying to move from a home he rents to the condo that he owns.  The time was never there for him to get it done. To top it off, he commutes weekly to another city where he rents a small bungalow.  So now, he’s maintaining 3 properties, renting 2 and owns one.

Then one Sunday when we saw him for breakfast,  he was so excited because he’d moved one box from his rental to his condo.

He said If I take a few boxes over each week when I’m in town, I could get it done.

Just think how far along I’d be if I’d just taken over a few boxes each week!

At least I’m making progress and doing something!

Isn’t that true?!  Sometimes we’re stuck in our tracks...immobilized at the thought of what we want to tackle. We think about what it will take to get it done.

So, what we end up doing is nothing.

Progress, not perfection.

Great reblog for this Monday morning. I always say my house is a work in progress. Although I get sick of the work sometimes, I'll take progress over nothing any day.

Love it!  Great share to start the week, and it reminds me of a video blog I just watched about someone who mentioned they kept thinking 'the next thing' would be their big break -- only to realize there was never one big thing, but a culmination of the little things --- the progress : )

Perfection is exhaustive and who defines when you get there? And what about the person, if they are never happy trying to reach the bar that they themselves place way way too high? Make it better than it was before and move toward the goal. Patience is key unless ulcers, sleepless nights and self flagellation seems like the best way to spend the race through your life.
