To honor my beautiful Mother on Mothers Day.

She is in heaven and can no longer hold my sister and I in body, but always will in heart and soul.  This is a photograph of my Mother, Marie Walker Rawls holding my sister and best friend Sandra Parker in 1944.  With loving memories, Elizabeth Ann

old photo of my mother and sister as a baby

Mother had a lovely voice and enjoyed singing to me.  The one I remember the most is "In the Garden".  It is a trait I did not inherit from her, she would sing a few words and say OK, now try it again...off I would go at the top of my lungs for about one second till her laughter then mine stopped our song again, and again.  After we laughed, she would start again, and we would repeat that over and over, till she would finally give up and just give me a big hug.  I remember it like it was yesterday, and as she was laughing she would say "No, not like that, now listen Elizabeth Ann" , and she would start over, till I joined in and the laughter started all over again.

Wow..  What a very moving story Liz.  It brought up feelings of my mother who died when I was 27.  Although I don't have a lot of "special" memories of her, I will never forget that she brought me into this world.

She had to raise me and my 3 younger sisters alone with nothing after my father left us.  We were very young and went through very hard times, but I know now that my mother did the best she could with what she had.  It's been over 20 years, but I will always remember her and she will forever be in my heart.

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers past and present!

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers who are in real estate, working, while raising a family.  I don't know how you do it!  My hat is off to you.

Liz - what a beautiful picture.  Your mother looks like a wonderful woman, very kind eyes, and looks like she laughed a lot.  I'm sure you miss her. Thank you for sharing your story.

What a lovely tribute to your mother, Liz!  Mine passed away in 2000.  She was my best friend and it is so painful having to be without her in this life.  But I know she is watching from above and I look forward to the day when we will be re-united.

Liz, beautiful tribute to your Mother.  I lost Mamma unexpectedly in 1996.  She was a young 75.  From your 1944 picture, it seems our mothers were close in age.  Happy Mother's Day!

Hi Denise, I'm glad to hear you say that, " I know now that my mother did the best she could with what she had"!  That is huge, and a big point in learning how to forgive someone and ourselves too.  We all have trials, and problems in our lives, some more than others, but when you forgive and let go of all the hurts they cause you are "Set Free", and what a wonderful feeling that is.  Our parents all did the best they could with what they knew and had, and it took me a long time to believe that, and forgive a lot of bad things that happened to me as a young girl.  My Mother had a hard life, but she loved her flowers, her music, nature, my Daddy, and my sister and I very much.  I miss them both so much, still.  So I choose only to remember and think about the good things, good times, and let the rest go.  Seems like you have too, and that's great.  Have a beautiful weekend, Liz

Susie, a big Amen to that one!  Being a Mother is not easy, being a working Mother, God bless you.  I unfortunately was never able to have children, that's why I'm so close to my sisters kids, grand kids, and great-great grand kids.  I feel just like they were mine.  We have a small family but we are very close, and all live within a few miles of each other now.  Of course my sister Sandra, her 2 daughters and one granddaughter all work on my team, so that's really nice.  Sandra raised her two girls by herself and worked the whole time, so I know fist hand how much work that takes.  Liz

April, well hopefully you're right...but they did kick me out of my church choir :).  Liz

Penny, you got a keen eye!  Yes, Mother was a very kind person, loved her birds, and flowers, and she was quick to laugh.  I have always loved old pictures (not just of my family), I'm in the process of trying to find as many as I can of my family.  I love this picture too, Sandra was a cute little chubby child :).  You can tell someone is in the background maybe it was Daddy, making her laugh.  She is looking at whoever was over there, and Mother is looking straight at the camera.  Thanks for you nice comments.  Liz

Retha, thank you, and yes we were.  Hope you have a very blessed Mothers Day.  Liz

Liz:  What a great way to honor your Mom.  It is an interesting picture you chose... I was born in 1944, too.  You mom looks like she was a very stylish woman... I can tell how much you miss her... just as I miss my Mom.  You are in my thoughts... take care...

Jason my friend, thank you so much I really do appreciate it.  I can't wait to read your post to your mom and beautiful wife.  You are so eloquent, I know it will be beautiful.  L

Karen Anne, that is too cool you were born the year that photo was taken!  So you and my sister are about the same age, and I just 4 1/2 years behind, I was born in Feb. 1948, and I always have to get that 1/2 in on my sister :).  In her younger years my aunt used to tell me that both Mother & Daddy were quite the couple!  Unfortunately later in life, it was a littler harder on Mother, and I never really knew her that way.  She was a really wonderful Mother, as I'm sure yours was.  Liz

Denise, I hope to get to know you better.  Liz

Deb, thanks I take that as a compliment.  Sandra says I'm looking more like her all the time.  Sandra tends to favor Daddy.  I have a surprise for YOU :) :) L

Annette, yes they were, Mother was 75 or 76, fairly young.  We had lost Daddy 5 years earlier, and she was never the same after that.  They had been married 50+ years, and Mother was very old school, she never learned to drive a car, if you can believe it.  She relied heavily on Daddy for all that kind of stuff.  Take care and have a wonderful Mothers day, L

Steve,I'm so sorry, it is so hard. Holidays are always tough, I'd love to see a picture of her?  L

Hi Liz - a lovely tribute to your mom, and what a fabulous picture to have of her to share here with us.  It's beautiful!  It's been 3 years since we lost my mom and I miss her terribly every day.  I wrote a post about her last year, and this year did mostly pictures - wish she was here instead of pictures....

My name is Elizabeth Ann as well - Ann after my mom and Elizabeth after my mom's sister.

Happy Mother's Day to all!

Liz, What a wonderful tribute to your mom! Guess she wanted you to learn to sing:) It reminded me of my own mom always singing around the house when we were younger. I am lucky enough to still have her and I will remind her of this later this afternoon. (She can barely speak, now due to a stroke, but I am sure she would still be singing if she could) Happy Mothers' Day!

Hi Phyllis, thank you, yes it is interesting what we remember!  I really don't have a good recall, and envy people that can remember to under 5 or 6 years old, which is about were mine start.  My most vivid is Mother dropping me off my fist day of kindergarten, and how much I cried :).  I did not want to stay without my Mommies :).  Liz

Hi Ann, I see your beautiful Elizabeth name got shortened to Ann, I rally think it is such a beautiful name, and wish mine had not been lost in school.  I know a lot of people who hate their name, we are lucky, and our Mothers were good to name us Elizabeth Ann.  I know how you feel, it is hard, especially on holidays.  Take care, Liz

Hi Don, glad you enjoyed it and hope you had a great day.  Liz

Hi Karen, hope you had a very special day with your Mom today.  My great Niece that works on the team as the third generation fixed lunch for me, her mom, her grandmother (my sister), and her other aunt.  It was a perfect day in Houston/Katy, sunshine, about 80 degrees, family, great food, who could ask for anything more?   And I got cards, gifts, a day at the spa, and we played that new TV Mario game...perfect!  Home yours was too.  Liz

Hi Sharon, thank you, it was a spur of the moment thing.  I just got copies of some old family photos, and just love this one.  Hope you had a great day too.  Liz

Hi June, thanks, and yes she and Daddy were.  In fact I just ran across a copy of my real estate licence I received in 1976.  I had mailed it to Mother & Daddy and wrote on the top, "Dear Mother & Daddy, wish me luck"!  They had saved it all those years, and I found it in Mothers things when she passed.  I now have framed it and have it hung in my office.  They had also kept all the press releases, etc. that I had sent them over the years.  When they retired they moved back to Kirbyville in East Texas, it's about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Houston, and I would go up at least every other week.  Hope your day was special too, Liz

Liz, I read this last night this morning yesterday morning before I went to bed -- I thought I commented but, I guess I didn't.

I enjoyed reading about your Mom -- my Mom was always singing too -- while she cooked and ironed and rocked my baby brother to sleep.  No, I can't sing either!   But I can cook like her.  :)

Glad you had a beautiful Mother's Day -- mine was very nice too.

Liz, what a nice tribute to your mom.  I love the picture.  Just so you don't feel too bad, I can't sing either. lol.

You are doing a wonderful job with the Texas group.  We are so lucky that you came along.  I just wish I wouldn't have been so swamped that I missed the get together.  I heard about it from Trey.

Liffy,

I had seen the picture of your mother and Sandra before, but I had forgotten how pretty she was.  You are right both you and she looked like pap Walker.  It is so strange that both she and mother had more than the same birthday in common.  The song In The Garden was mother's favorite song also and the one she loved to sing more than any other hymn.  Mother also had a beautiful voice.  I remember when she would sing I would think "that's my mother singing that beautifully".  It's just unfortunate that she didn't have the opportunity to really develop her voice.  Thanks for the memory..........

Hey Cousin Tommy, glad you stopped by and found this post, I forgot to tell you about doing this.  I didn't know Aunt Lenny and Mother had the same birthday!  Guess you must have told me, but you know how that goes.  I should put a picture of me, Mother and pap Walker all up on the same page, it really is remarkable.  Love you, Liffy
