Don't Assume My Competence Based On Who I Work For.

Kathleen Daniels has challenged us to share one of our pet peeves as a real estate agent. We all have many but some just irritate more than others.

My pet peeve is assumptions made and voiced by other agents and brokers. Specifically assumptions based on who I work for. I work for myself, I own my own company, we have a great name for my service area, we are independent, not franchise related.

Before opening my own brokerage I worked under two other hats, big names. So what, that makes me better? I don't think so.

Because I don't work for one of those box names or franchises, apparently I am pretty useless. I just do not understand why agents and brokers at big name companies automatically assume because I don't do what they do, that my side of a transaction is now going to become more work for them.

There are good, bad, brilliant and indifferent agents and brokers in every company. None of us should be labeled based on the hat under which we serve.

"The only people that need consider my competence are future clients and it should be based on my service record."

As agents and brokers we have the universal right to decide who we want to work for. It can be a big box name, small company or start our own. It's more important we get to do want we want, and different companies offer different things.

I am comfortable with the service I provide my clients, I don't over work, I can take time away, I am fully capable, experienced, licensed, and choose to work with who I want to, which just happens to be my company.

I just cannot see why that makes me a liability in the eyes of other agents and brokers. So to the agents and brokers that do assume.......stop it! It's not a fair judgement at all.

Corinne Guest, Managing Broker - you are singing a tune close to my heart as well. Assuming anything is just not right. I've carried more than my load working with agents who sport the big box name and frankly have little training and truly show they do not know much about how to transact real estate.

We hear you loud and clear, and this is an important message for those who don't understand what it means to be a true independent.  When we had our practice, many buildings were owned by pension funds whose modus operandi was hire the big companies, not the one who can do the job.  It is the the SYA system Save Your A---/  A

You know we love independent brokerages!  When we started selling real estate (always have been independent, never been with a franchise) we used to attend a group called The Brokers Council of Idaho - a group of independent brokerages & broker/owners that got together once a week to share, learn, network, present listings, etc.  To date, 13 years later the broker/owners that I met there are still some of the most my highly respected and excellent agents in our valley.   Good job Corrine. -Kasey

Corinne Guest, Managing Broker  I don't judge an agent by what company they work for as long as they are cooperative .  Sorry you have had a bad experience with some agents . I know many agents who have decided to leave the big name Brands and open up themselves .They are a pleasure to deal with

I hear ya on this one.  I have been licensed since 1981.  In the past 35 years, I have always worked for a big box broker as you say.  However, about 2 years ago, my broker decided to drop the franchise, and go independent.  I have loved it!

Sounds like there is bullying going on. I'm also an independent broker but I get the same type of clients they do. In many cases, they leave THEM to give me their business. Don't let them get away with that crap!

Odd assumption on their part, Corinne Guest, Managing Broker ... as I would think just the opposite really.  In your independent situation, who would care more than you about the level of services provided and the reputation your business reaps?  Backward thinking on their part ..
