Just another post about millennials . . .

This is just another post about millennials. Yep, I'm writing about millennials, and like hundreds of other posts, and I have a lot to say. First, let me tell you that I am surrounded by the millennial demographic. They're everywhere. Not only are they everywhere, but they're taking over, and I've had more surprises than expected.

My office administrator is a millennial. I pondered for a couple years about inviting her to join me as my direct assistant and now my office administrator. Did I really want to take a chance on the much maligned millennial generation? Well, yes, I did. She is incredible, dependable and a hard worker who is intelligent, faithful and always ready to tackle any task. She would definitely turn many millennial assumptions upside down.

Then again, my son, a millennial, is the best electrician I have ever had on my contracting company staff. He is a gifted trouble-shooting technician and he is one of the neatest, fastest and customer savvy people who has ever worked for me, and he loves to learn. I should have known that millennials are more than the dribble you read online.

Beyond those two, there are my millennial real estate clients (and I have a bunch). I chatted with one today and I told her that my millennial clients always have their paperwork to the lender on time or early, they always ask lots of questions (they don't leave anything to chance) and they show up on time every time for appointments and they are tech savvy. Texting is their baby, which makes communication easy, and things like electronic signatures don't scare them. They're used to it. Beyond that, some of my sharpest, most entertaining and fun clients have been millennials. I wouldn't pass this bunch up for any reason. I've never had one that was snarky, condescending or arrogant. I can't say that about their predecessors.

When you think of millennials, don't write them off because of something you've read on a blog or online, talk to them, get to know them and for heaven's sake don't clump them all together, because there is a whole group out there that is shaping the country and the world.

I'm a parent to one of the hardest working most dedicated humans I've ever met who falls into that age group.  And she bought a house last year and gave me a huge insight to that demographic.

I am in a small networking group that includes two millenials and they are two of the hardest working young people I know.  One owns his own insurance company and is getting married in June, and the other is an investment banker with baby on the way.

They are so put together, smart, and savvy.

I am currently working with a millenial, I brought her mother to tears when I expressed how mature she was and how she had handled the whole home search process. She is part of a blended family and was very thoughtful towards the children of her partner and their needs. I am very impressed and having my own kids and seeing their work ethic I know all that baloney on line is a exactly that.

This is just another great example of how so many generalizations about generations, especially in this case millenials, can be so wrong. I have had similar experiences to yours!

Hi Mike - It's never a very good move to write off any group of people, and that includes millennials. We've good luck with that demographic, and don't find their needs and quirks to be much different from others that we work with.

Please.  We got all excited over that Y2K thing that was going to kill us all and didn't.  So jumping ahead to the next millenium is a bit premature.

Thanks.

What?  Take people individually, as they are?  Not paint them with group assumptions?   What a concept.  :)

Good morning, Mike!

We cannot judge everyone by a few bad apples.  Yes, they seem to have a bad reputation, but there are those out there that are exceptions.  If you think about it, every group is that way.  Remember the hippie generation?

Great post. Very thought provoking indeed.

I operate on the basis not of, ethnecity or sex not of generation, but of the quality of the person. Do they have a desire to do the work necessary and in a manner that is to the good of all. Are they capable of doing the work required.

Just as millennials have been negatively labeled so have more mature people.

Both are wrong.

Thanks

Making decisions about people who happen to be part of some group based on things we've read about that group in general is never a good idea! So I totally agree with you (and should add that your office administrator is also very friendly so you can add that to your list of attributes!)

It's not that I write them off, I'm tired of seeing posts saying they have to be treated differently or with kid gloves. Just tired of it - either you're good at what you do or you aren't no matter what the age.

I'm with you 100% on that Lyn. I hired a millennial in June 2016. She only lasted two days. It was hard to look at another one, but I had gotten to know the one I hired later last year, and I was pretty confident that she would be a good match and she was. Personally, I wish the snowlakes who make the news would grow up and get a life. They make those who are making a life look bad.
