Born to parents who never attended high school, they inadvertently taught me that life was a struggle that could never be overcome. Raised in almost poverty sometimes, I had no large dreams and only wanted to survive. Having left home at 17, living in DC and working for the government, I began to meet people totally different than me. These people had big dreams, goals to be met, challenges to overcome. That’s when I began to believe you can rewrite your story.
It was the mid to late 60’s, I grew restless with the government and began to pursue a career as a paralegal. It was still the days of radical discussions, hippy-like clothing, free love thinking, and no holds barred living. Going through the drug culture, the rock and roll stages, and the “if it feels good, do it” phases, something began nagging at me, whispering to me, “you can rewrite your story.” While my friends spun out of control, I got married and started a family, all for the wrong reasons.
Through bad marriages, rough financial times, finding God and discovering who I really was, I made it into the 80’s, carrying baggage and dumping other baggage when I could. A career in real estate represented freedom to me, not just financially, but a means to rewrite my story, to change my small thinking into larger dreams, and a means to pursuit those dreams.
Life passes by quickly, and even though I may believe I am the same person inside, nobody can see it on the outside, so maturity and wisdom sets in, and life takes more twists and turns. I am a firm believer that you can rewrite your story. I loved serving God in an RV ministry and I treasure the years we were in it. After leaving ministry and being officially retired, though, boredom set in. I remembered that throughout my life, I rewrote my story, and with God’s permission, I would rewrite it again. That’s how TEAM Hughes Real Estate School came into existence, and I wouldn’t change one thing about the past few years.
Several years ago, an attorney told me I was a “permanent malcontent.” That bothered me until I realized that he was right. Why settle into a lifestyle forever? You can rewrite your story anytime you become complacent. If you love how you’re living and you are happy, then you don’t need to change it. If you are not loving life and not enjoying your job, however, why wouldn’t you want to rewrite your story? Practicing real estate gives you freedom, the liberty of becoming an entrepreneur, rewriting your story to take a direction you want to go, not having to go.
