Pondering Unintended Consequences

As much as the title may seem to some people...this is not a political post.

Although I can certainly understand how some may think so.

But again.  It is not.

It is about life.

And choices.

Choices and decisions.

And it’s not about good or bad choices.  Or decisions.

Well, not necessarily.

I am sure there are examples we all can cite where we could predict a train wreck-in-the-making.

Figuratively.

In life.  And, of course, in real estate where we along with our clients, are faced with many decisions to make.

My advice is to think of the consequences.

In the words chosen.

And in behavior.

It makes a difference.

Sometimes it is readily apparent.

While other times, the consequences are revealed later.

Recently, I’ve been pondering this subject….

and found some quotes that I find quite meaningful.

And I’d like to share….just because...it’s Saturday and because I was pondering...really for no other reason.

The law of unintended consequences pushes us ceaselessly

through the years, permitting no pause for perspective.

Richard Schickel

There are downsides to everything;

there are unintended consequences to everything.

The most corrosive piece of technology

that I've ever seen is called television -

but then, again, television, at its best, is magnificent.

Steve Jobs

The greatest thing that science teaches you is

the law of unintended consequences.

Ann Druyan

How about you - are you pondering anything in particular today?

Hmm, I didn't think it was going to be political, I thought it might be about Mr. M's decision to enter into that dark theater where he was goosed by a cat, thus scarring him for life with regard to cats and theaters, haha.

Michael,

Another of your great musings posts.  I think that the law of unintended consequences is definitely something to keep in mind when making a decision.  Some decisions have to be made when it is a matter of one's sanity at stake.  We have had many friends who made this type of decision, and it made a big difference when it came to happiness in their lives....and the hell with what everyone else thinks, that decision set them free to be who they are, rather than pretending for the sake of others.  A

Happy Saturday, Michael- Larry is always talking about the law of unintended consequences and the wonderful example of that is the quote by Steve Jobs. In grad school, I was introduced to a book by Rudolf Dreikurs called Logical Consequences. (excellent parenting book)

Half the problems that arise in real estate could be avoided if a Realtor would just take a minute before acting or reacting and think, just pause to consider the likely consequences and outcome of their actions. But do they? Well, we all know the answer to that.

I always taught my children to remember their life is a reflection of choices made, so choose wisely. Don't like what you're seeing? Make different choices. This is a wonderful reminder about such an important aspect of living a happy and successful life.

And if I were to have believed my sister many years ago. I might have developed a real complex figuring I was the result of unintended consequences!

Hi Michael - Good thoughts and quotes. Our lives are littered with unintended consequences - some of them are life lessons, and others just seem like the universe is out to get us, no matter how much we try to minimize their occurrence.

Every action we take in our lives impacts us and those around us in ways we couldn't begin to predict.  A simple decision to be polite and tell a friend that I wasn't feeling up to a party she was having in a few days seemed the right thing for me to do.  Give notice on the RSVP.  It has stressed our friendship.  She was practically crying on the phone, "How did you know you wouldn't be up for it DAYS before."  It really upset her.  And here I thought I was doing the right thing and not letting it hang out there.

Chris Ann Cleland - I don't see a win there for you. Had you waited to the last minute she would likely have been upset too. What people don't understand is "not feeling up to a party" does not mean we don't feel well or are sick. Sometimes we just don't have the party in us.  Real estate can suck the life force out of us ... and yet we never show it.  I hope she forgives and comes to understand that you felt you were doing the right thing.

Michael Jacobs - I spend a lot of time pondering many things.  So many dots in life are waiting to be connected ... as the journey continues to unfold.  We just had a little hail storm. I took a video. Within 5 minutes the sun came out and it sit here in my office pondering ... all of it.  As I do that I realize I am hungry and ponder making vegetable curry ... and maybe some cherry pie.

Whether it is real estate...OR ...life in general....we know that thinking first in the very specific sense of what happens next or because of.....is a wise thing to do..and your post a wise thing to consider.

Hmmm, this is definitely a provocative post Michael and these days the laws of unintended consequences are more than operative.   Although sometimes things can be left to chance, we are mostly the sum of our choices-good, bad or indifferent!
