Fragrance Friday! It is the Season!

By

Lilacs!

The Farmers Almanac says that the ideal shrub has ten canes and produces the flowers at eye level.  Well I think these meet that criteria!

We have had good rain and a decent amount of snow and I have to say that this is the most that have ever bloomed at the same time.  The bees are out and the fragrance is wonderful.  Normally, we don't see these until mid-May but they started blooming at the end of March.

I have to admit, I will be sorry to see them go. But right now I can enjoy this once a year delight!

We are having an early spring and therefore an early summer. I can almost smell the fragrance from the lilac bushes.

Hi Debbie, our Spring has been starting early but should go until the second week of June. Short Summer and long Fall. So the extreme seasons are shorter than the mild ones.

Hmm, I have been wanting something with a great fragrance by my front door, I planted a jasmine shrub a few years ago, but it doesn't seem to give off that much fragrance.

Apr 08, 2017 07:39 AM
Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

Try a night blooming Jasmine also. They can be planted in a pot by the door.  You won't be able to get lilacs where you are located. They need a good freeze and some snow to do well.

I saw your picture at the Farmer's market but never expected my lilacs to bloom this early. Every stock is blooming which is unusual.

I like the smell of my hyacinths this time of year.  And I'm hoping my American Fringe Tree blooms better this year.  It was unimpressive last year.

Sheri,  I love the color ... the blooms are beautiful. Mother Nature sure has mixed things up for us this year ... hasn't she.  I'm sitting in my home office this morning and it started to rain.  A few hours later a hail storm (rare here) passed through. Within 5 minutes the sun came out is shinning as bright as ever.

Actually, I kind of like weather that changes like that. But I am not a fan of wind. We lived in different homes in the wind tunnel in SoCal. Wind is not my friend!

I love lilacs too - there was a poem that I loved as a child about lilacs! Lydia is Gone This Many a Year  I think I will try to buy a lilac tree this year for my yard

Hi Lise,

My only regret is the season is so short. This is why I plant many different plants that bloom at different times. So fragrance is always in the air. Lilacs are at the top of the list, though!
