Answering the Call of Duty (Jury Duty) Monday Morning

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Bend Premier Real Estate 200009031

In all my life I have been called for jury duty three times. The first time was at least 20 years ago.  I was placed as an alternate on a trial, but moved to primary the 2nd day. At the start of the 3rd day, we were all dismissed as a mistrial was called.  The 2nd time for jury duty was about 8 years ago in which I was called up and attended the jury orientation for a major trial, but my number was not called and I was dismissed. My 3rd time for jury duty starts Monday morning.

When I received the summons 2 weeks ago, I considered my options - ask for a postponment for two months which puts us right in the middle of our peak selling season in summer - or agree to show up now. I decided now would be easier than later.  However, this weekend and this last week have been busy.  As the managing Principal Broker and owner of my brokerage, I am constantly working with my agents on their deals and questions plus working to better position the company within our market. Just this weekend, I have helped two of my newer agents successfully negotiate their first deals with our company, covered for an agent who unexpectedly was called out of town, brought on two new agents to the company, and entertained two extremely interested parties for my husband's spec home under construction. This in addition to reviewing the files on 10 new deals, reviewing the closing paperwork and issuing the closing checks of 10 sales, plus working hard on new marketing concepts, a committment and purchase of materials for a brokerage exposure at a Home & Garden show in a month, plus memorizing and teaching the new fitness program which is my second job, passion, and stress release.

I will show up to the jury orientation Monday morning at 10:30 and hope (!!) that I am not needed this week. I am committed to the state association meetings on Thursday (I serve on a state committee), and am having my entire family over for Easter next Sunday, but if I am placed on a jury, I will do my duty....but hope this will happen after my crazy week is over...jury duty is for two weeks and right now, next week looks way better.

Good Luck! It never happens at the best of times so you grin and bear it. I've been selected 3 times...I am beginning to think I have "I'll do it" stamped on my forehead!

You are very busy and hope you will bet a bye on having to serve right now. Have a good week regardless.

Hi Lynnea.  I've been called numerous times and once had a seat on a grand jury.  It's our duty as citizens.

Lynnea, sounds like a really bad time for jury duty, but not sure there would be a good time.

Oh, gosh, I do hope that they gave you a 'bye' again!  I can't imagine being called right now - it's definitely not something my business would be prepared for either, Lynnea!

I had to attend the state association meeting on Thursday, Debe Maxwell, CRS , and they granted the time away.  And so far, I have remained "uncalled."  I have checked in for Monday - nothing.  I will call in again on Monday evening and will see what is happening the 2nd week of duty.

So far every time I have been tagged I have not been called. It used to be before my citizenship I got rejected, now I just have not had an opportunity to serve.

Haven't checked back in with you but, did you get called in for the second week, Lynnea? I'm so happy that you got to attend your association meeting too.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I did have to serve the 2nd week - and it was an interesting experience. I need to blog about it.   Thanks for asking!
