Not that I would compare my real estate brokerages to these giants - wish I could - but I do tend to think big so my "niche" is more "out of the box".
A LITTLE OVERVIEW:
What's not a surprise to anyone, real estate agents pop up like weeds when the housing market goes up, and shrivel up when the housing market goes down.
In the middle, where we are now here on the Monterey Peninsula, competition is stiff. However, I do believe just like the national average in this profession, a small percentage does most of the work. The rest just limp along.
SO HOW DO I TRY TO STAND OUT?
SELLING REAL ESTATE IN BOTH CALIFORNIA & HAWAII.
Yes, you read correctly. Rather than going after a certain market segment and leaving the rest to the "big box" brokerages who have umpteen agents who specialize in ONE area, I advertise myself as a real estate broker in both California and Hawaii.
And clients like that.
RATHER THAN WORKING WITH DIFFERENT AGENTS IN DIFFERENT CITIES, THEY CALL ME.
And they don't even ask, "what type of real estate do you handle," they just assume I do everything - and I do. Doesn't matter what type of real estate you need, I'm there for you.
THAT DOES NOT MEAN I JUST GET CALLS FOR HAWAII PROPERTIES, NOT BY A LONG SHOT!
Most of my clients in California travel to Hawaii, so we have a lot to talk about, good times that they had there. But they might just want to list or buy here in California.
The effect is that they don't treat me just like another agent or worse, an agent in a long list of agents in someone else's brokerage. No sir, I have my own brokerage, I run my ship, and I chose my clients.
IS IT MORE DIFFICULT?
Yes it is. I belong to 3 different MLSs, 2 boards, pay a boatload of monthly and annual fees to a variety of associations, and take a lot of required continuing education courses not to mention keeping up with the real estate laws of 2 states.
COULD I BE MORE STREAMLINED? DOWNSIZE WHAT I DO?
Of course, but what fun would that be. My clients have a variety of real estate needs and I want to help them. If I don't know something, I will find out.
SO THAT'S MY NICHE: Jack of all real estate transactions in two states.
