It's National Pet Day Today, April 11th! (And How To Celebrate)

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty 179530

Today is National Pet Day. Of course, as far as I'm concerned, every day should be National Pet Day... and that's certainly how my cat, Oliver, feels as well.

National Pet Day was founded in 2006 by the well-known animal welfare advocate, Colleen Paige, to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of the many different kinds of animals awaiting  fur-ever homes in shelters and rescues all around the globe.

How to celebrate National Pet Day? Here are a few suggestions from PetDayUSA.

1. Adopt a pet from your local shelter or rescue organization. (See the short list below of places where you can adopt a pet on National Pet Day in the Charlotte metro area.)

2. Volunteer at your local shelter to help care for the animals.

3. Donate blankets, food and toys to a local shelter or rescue organization.

4. Host a National Pet Day party and celebrate all your pets!

5. Take photos of your pets and post them on our Facebook page!

6. Assist an ill, elderly, or a financially struggling neighbor or friend by purchasing pet food and other needed items for their pets.

7. Buy your pet a new toy (or several new toys, for that matter).

And you can always cook up some pet treats for your dog... allrecipes.com provides some great alternatives. SimplyPets.com provides some great ideas for homemade cat treats.

Hi Nina - The weather has warmed up and the lake as well, so this afternoon, I'm heading home early to take the dogs swimming - their first since last fall! It's their very favorite thing, and they'll be exhausted enough to grant me some peace and quiet this evening, so everyone wins!

George Souto ~ hi George... for me it's a great opportunity to beat the drum for shelter pet adoptions, a cause that is near and dear to my heart, as you already know.

Dick Greenberg ~ hi Dick... what a lovely way to celebrate the day! Funnily enough we had two dogs who didn't care to swim at all, but I know that so many do.

Happy National Pet Day, Oliver!   Be sure to thank Miss Nina for adopting you and giving you a nice home!   My two cats are rescue cats - one came from a dumpster behind a Title Attorney's office, the other is from an old train station.

Fred Griffin ~ oh my gosh, Fred... your rescues led interesting lives before they found a home with you. When Oliver picked me out in the shelter, he'd only been there a week or so and we think because he likes to run out the front door that he did so with a previous family and got lost and no one knew where to find him. It was clear he had been well cared for and not afraid of people. I was very lucky that he found me.

Hi again, Nina.  You may want to consider a microchip for Oliver, so that if he runs away, he can be identified.   None of my cats have been chipped, but I see stories on the news now and then where a lost cat with a chip is returned to the owner.

Fred Griffin ~  hi Fred... I've thought about it, but we are very careful about watching Oliver not sneak out when the front door is open. Besides, he is 20 pounds and too fat to squeeze through our fence which runs around the property. The few times he's gotten out, after he wanders the yard, he just goes and sits on the front porch or uses the doggy door to get into the screen porch and patiently waits for me to let him in. Always gives me that look to say "well it took you long enough." (Like I chased him outside...)

Good morning Nina.  I smiled at buying our fur babies a new toy.  Sheldon (our youngest) can destroy a toy in a short amount of time.  Haven't found one to stand up to him yet

I'm a day late in commenting, Nina Hollander ... but I totally agree with you.  Every day should be one of celebrations regarding our pets.  Our family dog, Maggie, passed a while back ... but I did donate to a charity in her honor.  Best dog ever ... and I still miss my furry daughter ...

Too late.  We adopted a dog back in October.  She's big, sweet and has no concept of separation from people.  She acts up so much and gets so hyper when we are around, the's earned the acronym: CAD - Crazy Ass Dog.

She's so sweet but so emotionally needy.

Hi Mick... at least you adopted and didn't buy. She sounds lovely.... I had one of those whom I adopted and who lived happily with us for 15 years. Still miss her a lot.
