Spring Home Detox

Spring is here! The trees are green, the flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, and the ground is glowing (with yellow pollen). We all know what that means. Time to declutter! One necessity of any living area is to take the time every once in a while to just clean. Everything.

Over time, we tend to collect junk, trash, old papers, clothes that don’t fit anymore, and other items that build up in our homes and create more clutter and less space. A simple solution to rid yourself of unnecessary items is to schedule a time to clean out your entire home. No one wants to do it at first, but the feeling afterwards to have everything clean and freshened up is worth it! The Brasher Group has provided a simple list of tips and things people often neglect to help you get started on reducing clutter in YOUR home.

Start with the area you don’t want to do most.

So often we put off the things we don’t want to do till the end, thus it sometimes tends to not get done. To prevent the inevitable cleaning of that one room or closet that appears to be storage or an office but is a bedroom, we suggest you start there. Then, once it’s over, you can look at it and see what you accomplished!

Continue to living and multi-purpose areas.

A good cleaning of all general-purpose areas is easy to do when one is already in the cleaning zone. Instead of only tackling the large projects, be sure to wipe down areas that are often forgotten about, such as book shelves, side tables, and home décor. These places still collect dust!

You have ceiling fans? WIPE THEM DOWN!

The most build up we tend to see in a home we are selling or showing is on a ceiling fan that has collected dust for years. Bring a trash can into the room to dispose of excess dust and wipe the fan blades down with a paper towel to remove the surface dirt. Follow the initial wipe down with a cleaning product to ensure the fan is dust free.

Don’t forget those pesky side boards!

It is so easy to clean the dirt off floors and not think about the dirt that’s building up on the side boards too. Wipe them down with a baby wipe or wet paper towel and cleaning product. This will pick up most of the dirt and dust that has built up and leave your side boards looking shiny and new!

Store winter clothes.

My favorite part of spring cleaning is going through my closet and folding up my winter clothes, placing them in a storage bin, and pulling out my spring and summer clothes! While transferring winter to spring, remove old clothes that don’t fit. Some clothes just get old and used and it’s time to get something new. This process can be tedious, but to spice it up a little we suggest doing something fun with the family and put on a little fashion show! When trying on clothes, turn a hallway into a runway and enjoy a good laugh with the family as you find which clothes to keep and which to get rid of.

Remove items you do not use.

If you come across old magazines, old papers, paired items that are missing their other half like gloves, or decorations that are no longer useful, collect them and place them in a box aside for later. For these items, we have a few ulterior ideas.

  •          Repurpose old or used items.
  •           Recycle old books and papers.
  •           Donate items to a local charity.
  •           Have a garage sale!

Lastly, get the family involved!

Making the time to declutter the house can be a chance to have a little family time. Turn on the jams, create separate jobs, and get creative. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be miserable!
