Friday Fotos--Spring Wildlife at Fishhawk Lake

By

Things are "popping" up all over now that spring has finally decided to show her lovely face around these parts of our coastal range of Oregon!

I haven't seen or photographed a frog in many years and had just had a dream of seeing one only a couple of days before this one leaped in front of me while I was studying some salamanders in our stream! I didn't have my camera on at the time and thought I'd missed my opportunity. But, no--this fella hid for a bit in the murky waters, then came out from under the floating flotsam to pop his head up and give me ample opportunity to grab some quick snaps. I like the halo he presents above his nose, an angelic frog, perhaps?

This is the Northern Pacific Treefrog (also named the Pacific Chorus Frog and I can attest to its lovely song that brings about an entire chorus at night in our meadows).

Some others have been lurking in the shallow murky depths of our small stream that feeds into Fishhawk Creek

These two were the creatures that got my attention originally just before the frog leaped in front of me. Spring brings out these northwestern salamanders or roughskinned newts enmasse, especially after spring storms, when I often find them traipsing across the local roads. I almost always stop to pick them up and take them to the other side, because I don't like seeing them squished! (I've even done this sometimes when I have buyers in my vehicle. I've shared them almost like a science/nature walk with kids that I will sometimes have with me, or even adults who've never seen one. One of my buyers took some quick photos holding it, as they were from another country and wanted to send the pics to relatives in Japan).

A plethora of wildlife awaits anyone who will take the time to stop and explore our Pacific Northwest coastal range area, specifically wildlife at  Fishhawk Lake.

If this piques your interest to know more about full or part time living at Fishhawk Lake, please give me a call for a private tour of the community I love and am a member of!

Gayle-Those salamanders are a pretty color. You find some interesting creatures in nature. Ones who are even creating new life. Maybe that is why the angel frog was there.

Sharon Lee one of my neighbors calls them "mud puppies", and even checking them out on the Ore. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife link, I still wasn't quite sure which ones they were. Newt or salamander? Their orange undersides are quite fetching!

Beth Atalay I was so excited I could hardly contain myself! He sat there quite still so as to give me the chance to get a few clear shots of his personage. The last time I caught a photo of one of these was over 10 years ago, in our waterfeature here at the Lake.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I got lucky with these moments, as I'd been out in the pasture brushing the "girls" (Della and Pearl, my mule and horse) when I caught sight of the couple in the stream. Mother Nature blesses me often with planting me in the right place at the right time. Glad that you enjoyed these, because I know that you, too (two) also have a great perspective on what Mom N. offers us daily.

Jeff Dowler it's been a delight to hear the sounds of spring around here. The red-winged blackbirds calling, the barn swallows swooping, the cacophony of sounds at twilight...bring it on! Happy weekend to you, too.

Hi Gayle, our frogs are singing too. Isn't it a hopeful sign of better weather ahead? I'm so ready for some warm sunshine. You captured this handsome frog prince in all of his glory.  And the salamanders also gave you a glimpse into their private time. hahaha.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD simply finding the right time to get exterior photos for my newest listings has been near-to-impossible! I keep checking for more than 10 minutes of sunshine. Just about the time I think I can grab my equipment, I look outside and it's pouring. Oh, yes, those salamanders. I've witnessed this "private moment" often, but never had my camera to capture it! I don't think anyone else has a video of this, either. Another little Nat Geo moment for me!

Hi Gayle - Great photo & video. Spring is definitely in the air here. We won't see frogs for a while yet, but the birds are very busy with romance. I actually had to shut the windows for a while yesterday evening, just to get some peace and quiet. Have a great weekend!

Dick Greenberg romance and birds, huh!!! I love the sound of that. My raptor friend has told me about a book that explains bird behavior the best, "What the Robin Knows" and I've ordered it online.

Brian England a working weekend, mostly, my friend! Photos of a new listing, now that the sun is (finally) out, and showing properties tomorrow! Hope you get out and do some hiking.

Gayle - one of the many reasons why I love our friendship in the rain is because of your genuine excitement for wildlife in nature. Your connection to the earth and all living things resonates with me. It's part of my DNA too! We truly are kindred spirits with passionate hearts for all life creatures!

Endre Barath, Jr. "unbridled enthusiasm" what a great description, I love that! Today I must've counted at least 12 different types of birds visiting my feeders today, along with the little chipmunks, vying for a spot. It was a delightful Easter morn to behold. (I worked today, but had terrific buyers). Thank you for a lovely message from you!

Patricia Feager you have no idea how often I think of you when I am partaking in nature's wonders! I have some good friends from AR who travel with me on my roads and visits around here and I share these moments with you all in my heart--you are most definitely a part of that. Especially when I am making suet for the gray jays or simply getting my feeders filled. I KNOW you are right there with me. Yes, we ARE kindred spirits. Love that!
