Things are "popping" up all over now that spring has finally decided to show her lovely face around these parts of our coastal range of Oregon!
I haven't seen or photographed a frog in many years and had just had a dream of seeing one only a couple of days before this one leaped in front of me while I was studying some salamanders in our stream! I didn't have my camera on at the time and thought I'd missed my opportunity. But, no--this fella hid for a bit in the murky waters, then came out from under the floating flotsam to pop his head up and give me ample opportunity to grab some quick snaps. I like the halo he presents above his nose, an angelic frog, perhaps?
This is the Northern Pacific Treefrog (also named the Pacific Chorus Frog and I can attest to its lovely song that brings about an entire chorus at night in our meadows).
Some others have been lurking in the shallow murky depths of our small stream that feeds into Fishhawk Creek.
These two were the creatures that got my attention originally just before the frog leaped in front of me. Spring brings out these northwestern salamanders or roughskinned newts enmasse, especially after spring storms, when I often find them traipsing across the local roads. I almost always stop to pick them up and take them to the other side, because I don't like seeing them squished! (I've even done this sometimes when I have buyers in my vehicle. I've shared them almost like a science/nature walk with kids that I will sometimes have with me, or even adults who've never seen one. One of my buyers took some quick photos holding it, as they were from another country and wanted to send the pics to relatives in Japan).
A plethora of wildlife awaits anyone who will take the time to stop and explore our Pacific Northwest coastal range area, specifically wildlife at Fishhawk Lake.
If this piques your interest to know more about full or part time living at Fishhawk Lake, please give me a call for a private tour of the community I love and am a member of!
